These Days: Thursday, January 12th, 2017

The Inauguration: Jackie Evancho, the sixteen year old America’s Got Talent who will be singing the National Anthem at the Inauguration is being condemned a traitor, Jackie’s big sister Juliet, a transgender person who will be there in spirit only, is being called a queer. According to a New York Times interview, Jackie said “I just kind of thought that this is for my country so if people are going to hate on me it’s for the wrong reason.”

The Press Conference: I’ve never much cared for Trump’s bullying, bellowing tone, he is just one of the nastiest characters around. As such, does that make him a bad President? Well, he has, to the best of my knowledge, never owned slaves so that should be kept in mind. But, the Evanchos make you root for everybody, Trump is the anti-Evanchos: he makes you root for nobody. You’ve heard of fake news? Now meet fake politics.

Concert: Yes, we posted it yesterday and here we are again today and here it is: the U2 at Metlife on June 28th second round of presales starts today at noon and the password is LINES.

Old Music: Wanna hear a really thrilling little album? Try the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra’s take on Mahler’s Symphony # 3 in B Minor. Still listening to Musicology...

Movies: Speaking of classical, I have been watching “Amadeus” again for the first time in decades and that moment where Mozart starts to rewrite Salieri’s composition stands out so well as to how genius functions. Mozart’s pause as he plays it, and then his comment “…but that doesn’t really work, does it?” and then fixes it is cinematic magic.

New Music: I have been circling the new Ryan Adams for a week now (it is released next month), and it improves and improves with every listen. I don’t know when I want to review it but I know I will. What I admire most is how it is all of a piece -it is a complete album with a consistent vision, it is an artistic statement about a romantic diaspora that sounds like what it is. And while I have claimed it doesn’t have that ONE SONG…. maybe it does, maybe “Shiver And Shake”.

Concerts: I bought a ticket for what will probably be my first show of the year, next Wednesday’s tribute to Yams – the A$AP Mob manager who died two years ago. The line up is impressive, all the A$APs which figures, but also the likes of Danny Brown and T-Pain. At the Theatre At MSG, tickets are still available.
