Cultural Amnesia: I am not claiming Bill Cosby wasn’t a monster who drugged young girls and raped them. When around 40 women have claimed it, it stands a great chance of being true. But I will make a couple of tangential points here.
1 – While it doesn’t explain Bill, in my 1970s getting women drunk was a primary form of seduction, not least because society had made women very inhibited.
2 – It seems odd, and sad, that one of the great black icons of the 20th century has been brought to his knees in the 21st Century.
3 – There is a sense in which what once was acceptable now isn’t and therefore we can’t see what happened clearly in the past. For instance, we don’t have 20 years of conscription the way they did in ancient Rome. Slavery is frowned upon. We don’t feed people to the lions (Unless you consider Rikers Island feeding people to the lions).
What I would guess happened that night between Andrea Constand and Bill Cosby -a huge celebrity who could presumably fuck any woman he wanted, is he invited her over. He gave her a couple of quaaludes and told her he was doing so. And he travelled the line between seduction and rape. One strong argument for rape is that Constand is a lesbian: why would she consent to sex with him? But Cosby didn’t see it as rape, he saw it as business as usual. Even in the 70s it would have to be considered rape. I loved Cosby and I loved the Cosby show, he normalized the black experience for the entire country, he affirmed black middle class consciousness (and jazz , of course) . But he should be in prison. Happy Father’s Day.
Happy Father’s Day: This is one day I have nothing whatsoever to do with. My dad died over 40 years ago and I have no children of my own. For me, some good points to being adrift in my life, and some bad points. Your mortality looms harder but your freedom is much wider. Plus, if you can get away from the Hallmark Card of Father’s Day, just remember everybody is a son and many people are father’s and really…. some men are terrible.
Concerts: Since rock nyc scribe Ken Davis has already reviewed it, I am thinking of passing on writing about Tom Petty at the Prudential Center. Petty’s 2013 residency at the Beacon Theatre (here) was so great, and every time I’ve seen him before before and since so wasn’t great (I’ve walked out on him twice), that I just knew what to expect. And that’s what I got. A brace of songs, well played but not really inspired. 100% rock and roll sure, but is that enough. Also, isn’t Petty getting a little on the plump side. I am not certain why Petty was pushing Wildflowers so hard, a coupla killer songs, and any night you get to see Petty perform “You Don’t Know How It Feels (To Be Me)” is a good night by definition. BUT FIVE SONGS??? – Grade: B+
More Concerts: So, how have the Dead broken up and kept on going? They should change their name to the Undead…
More More Concerts: Diana Krall, Jason Isbell and the Dead… see you there…
More More More Concerts: The thing about going to four concerts a week for ten years straight is that you take it completely for granted, all the moves, all the images, all the interaction blur into one huge vision of audience manipulation.
Sports: The Yanks have lost five in a row and they are still in first. What a lousy run… not that I blame them, I hate the West Coast myself. What annoys me is I have been steeling myself for this run all year and when I finally gave myself hope they fell to earth. On the other hand, the Mets are seven games under .500.
Whole Food And Amazon – There i a simple question here, who will replace the millions of jobs lost as retail stores become antiquated? Who will get the cab drivers jobs when the drivers are unnecessary. Sure, time makes blacksmiths of all of us but this fast? What to do with lower middle class blue collar people? What will replace them?
New Music: Lorde (Grade: A) is lording it over me though I am going to see Hillsong United today (Grade: F) and am struggling to listen to their dreadful new album.
Old Music: Beginning to delve deeper into Prince’s Lotusflower, I have it as a double so I’m missing the Bria Valente album, hanging on Prince’s coattails. I am not even ready to grade it yet -deep in thought!
Foreign Policy: Ok, got it. Michael Flynn clashed constantly with the Obama administration due to Flynn’s hardline against Islamic Extremists back in ’14. So Flynn formed a cyber security company with his contacts till Trump (in his ongoing efforts to thwart every single thing Obama ever did) hired him as National Security Advisor. I see.
POTUS: Say what you want, business is great for the Trump name.
Pride: There is nothing to be proud about in being gay, or unproud, but getting through societies slings and arrows? That you can take pride in. “FDNY’s first transgender grand marshal to march in Manhattan’s Pride Parade”.
ICE Baby Ice: “Ground Zero recovery worker from Queens targeted by immigration authorities for deportation …”
