These Days: Sunday, August 21st, 2016

The Olympics: President Obama wondered earlier this year, what Americans were so afraid of: “I told you earlier all the talk of America’s economic decline is political hot air. Well, so is all the rhetoric you hear about our enemies getting stronger and America getting weaker. Let me tell you something. The United States of America is the most powerful nation on Earth. Period. Period. It’s not even close. It’s not even close. It’s not even close. We spend more on our military than the next eight nations combined. Our troops are the finest fighting force in the history of the world. No nation attacks us directly, or our allies, because they know that’s the path to ruin. Surveys show our standing around the world is higher than when I was elected to this office, and when it comes to every important international issue, people of the world do not look to Beijing or Moscow to lead — they call us.” As I write, the US has 112 medals in the Olympics, the next nearest is  China with 67 and Britain with 66. Think about that for a moment, there are nations that will leave with none. Russia’s athletes got given the boot for drugging. And there you have it… out of 306 gold medals, the US has 43, out of 918 total medals, the US has 112.

Live: Shinobi Ninja’s 45 minute set at Gramercy Theatre last night was nothing special, just one of the best live bands you’ll ever see taking care of business the only way they know how. Review to follow but here is a sneak peek: Grade “A”/ Marc Anthony on Friday, Prophets Of Rage on Saturday.

Recorded: The new Frank Ocean album, Blonde (Grade: B+) makes its point through understatement, a quietly powerful r&b and rap selection of tracks that functions as a self-portrait, try “Solo”. My album of the week by Slow Club remains powerful, Annabelle Lord-Patey repays close listening.

Death: Matt Roberts, former 3 Doors Down bassist, died last night at the age of 38. Arthur Hiller, who directed “Love Story”, is dead at 91.

Sports: Mets rebound from a real drubbing on Friday to win yesterday and as for the Yanks? They are four games out of the wildcard. Whenever you have pitchers called up from the minors, you assume accurately that the hitters don’t know em yet, and let’s see how they maintain it. But even so…
