These Days: Saturday, January 21st, 2017

The Women’s March On DC Today: And beyond, rock nyc’s Helen Bach and her daughter and also rock nyc writer writer Mary Rudzis are marching in Hartford, Steve Crawford’s wife and daughter are marching in Austin, my niece Louba Lababedi and my sister Marie are marching in New York. The idea of retired Hawaii attorney Teresa Shook, here is the artist list for DC: Janelle Monáe, Maxwell, Angelique Kidjo, Toshi Reagon, Samantha Ronson, Emily Wells, DJ Rekha, MC Lyte, St. Beauty, Beverly Bond, Alia Sharrief, DJ Rimarkable, Amber Coffman, the Indigo Girls, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Climbing PoeTree. Wait a second… MAXWELL???

Concert: I went to see Kings Of Leon yesterday (Grade: C) and it is such a catch 22 -not only was the show an inefficient bore with some fine songs, now I have to find something interesting to say about it. So far I have a long opening paragraph comparing the callow, brooding and humorless Caleb Followill to your ex’s new boyfriend, much better looking than you but he terrifies her. A timebomb difficult to please or read and given to explosions of anger and occasional violence and your ex now has a wince and a quiet tenseness she never had before.

The Inauguration: No, but I read the headlines… for sure I don’t know how much worse than Kings Of Leon the music coulda been. “This American carnage stops right here”, the President exaggerated. I can’t take that crap, and I can’t take Trump.

Racism: I am so against racism that I feel like a racist simply through mentioning the self-evident. However, if this election has taught me anything it has taught me that presumed racism is no excuse for ignoring the real economic concerns of your fellow Americans. On a personal economic basis, I not only feel their pain I suffer from the same pain. Trump is the wrong answer but that’s Clinton and her Democratic backslappers fault, not his. The problem is that once you conclude your GOP friend is a racist all conversation and debate ends. There is nothing left to say. So you can’t do it. But then you look at Steve Bannon and how can’t you do it?

Books: Finally finished the Bruce book and mulling over a review and onto the Matt Taibbi wittily named “Insane Clown President”

New Music: That 14 year old Jacob Sartorius is THIRD GENERATION Justin Bieber. Shawn Mendes is his role model!!! But I do kinda like him, “Last Text” is fun and hey kids look at this, he is playing May 7th so catch em while they’re hot. The Last Text EP is very solid (Grade: B).

Old Music: I’m on a steady diet of the Specials and They Might Be Giant!

As someone formerly of the Rust Belt, for the future if only short term, they’ve had the last laugh. Yesterday’s putdown from the podium of everyone sitting behind him is what they wanted in their ticket. You wouldn’t know it to read the papers where the only people allowed to write headlines were cursing and crying.

The idea of a noble coalition of the good-thinking and nice white people at university, blogging, media, comedian shows on cable/YouTube and their shoeshine support for democratic values plus all the not-white people will ignite a grand resistance is delusional. The only thing it has going is the more it’s flogged, the more the coastal upper middle class good people and ladies get on trains to symbolically stamp their feet in solidarity against tyranny, the more wide and irreversible the divide becomes. If you’re on foodstamps do you have the money for a train ticket both ways and a room are you in these crowds?

Here’s Bruce in September: “I believe that there’s a price being paid for not addressing the real cost of the deindustrialization and globalization that has occurred in the United States for the past 35, 40 years and how it’s deeply affected people’s lives and deeply hurt people to where they want someone who says they have a solution. And Trump’s thing is simple answers to very complex problems …The whole thing is tragic.”

Most of Bruce Springsteen’s audience voted for the man. Poor Bruce, he wound up playing for HRC in Philly before the roof fell in and Obama a day or so ago. Pointless rearguard actions.
