These Days: Monday, January 9th, 2017

If nothing else, rock nyc is a website in search of itself. After eight years, we are as unsettled as ever, constantly shifting in its attempts to be some form of cultural barometer. Given time,, money, and writers, I always wanted to construct an ultimate consumer guide: a daily music paper to help you decide how to spend your time. God knows what it is now, after nine years without a substantial success, it really isn’t anything.

But the fun is in the attenpt.

I wrote “These Days” -a daily what’s up folks column, but killed it off because no one ever read it. Still, if that’s the criteria, for killing stuff off… Here it comes again….

Sports: The New York Giants and their fans embarrassed themselves in their first playoff game in five years. Beckham kept dropping balls and the defense finely succumbed to Aaron Rodgers and the Packers who exacted revenge for the past two playoff losses to the Giants.

Song Of The Day: You haven’t heard it yet, but Ryan Adams’ “Shiver And Shake” is ruling my world right now.

Awards: “La La Land” is setting itself up for the Oscars after winning seven Golden Globes. Meryl thinks Trump is a bully.

Weather: Here in New York we are freezing to death.

Tours: U2’s The Joshua Tree tour hits Metlife on Wednesday June 28th, and I assume they’ll add a coupla days to the event.

New Music: Yesterday, I reviewed Bowie’s No Plan EP, perfect for the near death experience of a week of being very very ill. Renee Fleming has a new album out, so does DC rapper Jefe.

Death: The great Village Voice jazz and politics commentator Nat Hentoff, dead at 91, the centrist former President of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, dead at 81. where does Peter Sarstedt go to at 75 years of age?

USA: So this is the USA in 2017: the entire government fighting tooth and nail over everything. By the time we are two years in it will be all gridlock all the time.
