These Days: Monday, January 30th, 2017

Theatre: If there is a better experience in 2017, if there is a finer way to get the bile out of your mouth, than please show it to me because the Complexions David Bowie tribute “Star Dust”  at  the Joyce Theatre, is an explosion of happiness. In a country in turmoil it is precisely the way art brings joys to our lifes, a glorious modern ballet, performed to David Bowie songs which reached a height twice, and had me grinning from ear to ear. There will be a review soon, and you can make your own way to the Joyce Theatre but it closes February 5th, 2017 so hurry.

New Music: The irascible John Mendelsohn is back with his latest band the Freudian Sluts… I know, I’m way backed up but also expect a review soon.

Old Music: Meanwhile, I’ve been listening to the soundtrack to the first half of Complexions, “Gutter Glitter”, which means plenty of James Blake. During the program I mistook him for Bon Iver and I know his material fairly well.

The Trump Era: His first serious overreach has been not allowing people with visitor and student  visas and resident aliens back in the country. This is still a democracy with the rule of law, whatever mandate Steve Bannon might claim to have. Americans know how to fight their government, they’ve done it before.

However: In 2011 former President Obama stopped issuing visas to Iraqis due to a flawed vetting system…

Television: “Riverdale” is Archie Andrews goes to Twin Peaks. Archie is having an affair with his music teacher, Mr. Lodge is in prison, Moose is a closet case, and on July 4th a student was… murdered. Must see TV.
