These Days: Friday, March 3rd, 2017

They love me, they really love me: So three people have told me they love me in the past week, maybe four, maybe six… The latest is Brandon Urie who late gig singled out the New York audience to tell us he loves us. He joins Arianne “I love you so so so much” Grande and Luke Bryan in the world of insane fealty.

Concerts: Speaking of which, Panic! At The Disco Were pretty good but Brandon lacks cohesion as a frontman (Grade: B), he can’t seem to make his show have an internal logic.

Jeff Sessions: ““In retrospect,  should have slowed down and said, ‘But I did meet one Russian official a couple of times, and that would be the ambassador.’ ” I really don’t see how he can get away with that lie. How can he not mention he’d just met with the Russian Ambassador when asked if he had met with a Russian official. So how did the press find out? The Intelligence Services leaked the story to #fakenews CNN. What on earth was Trump thinking of calling out the CIA? Is that the stupidest thing a President has ever done? It’s up there with having an affair with a Mafia Moll while you’re brother investigates them.

New Music: The new Ed Sheeran album Division isn’t as good as I thought it would be, he had already stripped the best three song (Grade: B+), but it is plenty good and will improve with a deeper listening. The new Coldplay song “Hypnotized” is excellent (Grade: A-) and the new Lorde single “Greenlight” (Grade: B+) sounds great if maybe a touch nondescript. Tim Kashner’s new album is prog rock by other means (Grade: B).

Old Music: I’ve been excavating the redoubtable Brett Eldredge, the chorus of a new song “You laugh at the way I dance, you smile when I hold your hand” is magic… “I think the song it’s called “To Love Someone”… a terrific song which makes two off his Spring release.

Death: From NYT: “Leon Ware, a writer and producer of sensual R&B songs who was best known for a memorable collaboration with Marvin Gaye on the 1976 album “I Want You,” died on Feb. 23 in Marina del Rey, Calif. He was 77.”
