Look at the size of this thing! This is the shotgun found with Kurt Cobain’s body on April 8th 1994 — the so-called suicide gun — hold by Seattle Police Department cold case homicide Det. Michael Ciesynski, the current detective of record for the Cobain case. And what’s wrong with this picture if I dare to say? We have always been told this shotgun didn’t exist anymore. Courtney Love has always said she had turned over the shotgun to Mothers Against Violence to melt it down. This is what she said in Seattle in 1994: ‘I don’t obviously want to keep them [Kurt’s guns], and hopefully by turning over these things I can make a difference and I can make some sense out of something so bereft of sense at all’
And apparently a lot of people believed it, detective Tom Grant included. So it is a huge surprise to see these new pictures, the first pictures ever of the gun in 22 years! And to clear any possible suspicion, one of the pictures shows the serial number, which matches the number on the receipt of the gunshop where Kurt purshased the gun.
The series of five pictures, which were taken on June 11th 2015, were just released by the police department in response to a public records act request from CBS News. What does it mean? What was the purpose to release them now? The police may have a good reason to release these pictures to discredit Tom Grant one more time, as the veteran detective has claimed the gun didn’t exist anymore, as Courtney Love had told him. At worst, it makes Tom look naïve, stupid (to believe Love’s words) and too confident, it doesn’t make him look like a crook. In revenge wouldn’t this prove that Courtney Love is a big time liar? As if this was not already established over and over. ‘How do you know when Courtney Love is lying? said Buzz Osborne, ‘Her lips are moving’
But how does this make the police look? What game are they playing?
What makes me laugh and angry at the same time is the idea reported by many publications that ‘conspiracy theorists claimed cops melted down to cover up a murder’… whereas this rumor was coming straight from Courtney Love’s mouth… why don’t people dig into old articles? Even Rolling Stone printed it in 1994. So if there is anyone to blame for this rumor, it’s not the conspiracy theorists. And if the authorities wanted to stop the rumor, why did they wait so long before releasing pictures showing the gun? Why letting the public and private detectives believe the gun had been destroyed? What was the purpose of this? This story would tend to show that the police have its own culture of secrecy, plus, it’s not as if they had kept the gun to secretly investigate, they have declared the case closed the same day the body was discovered.
By releasing these pictures the police only make things look worse… Check out the size of this shotgun! It’s huge and it shows a few surprising things as ‘conspiracy theorist’ Richard Lee pointed out, such as ‘a choke tube extension at the end of the barrel’… ‘This raises questions about the ease of turning such a weapon into the face of a holder.’ And this is a very legitimate question. I would add, why adding this extension when you want to kill yourself? Why doing it with this long thing, it doesn’t make any sense, extensions are made for hunting, not for shooting yourself in the face. ‘If the trigger area is adjusted to be around his belt line, the end of the barrel is slightly above his head,’ continues Lee, and he is damn right. These pictures make it very hard to believe Cobain used the gun against himself.
Far from quelling conspiracy theories about the death of Kurt Cobain as CNN and other informed sources are saying, these pictures have on the contrary revived the conspiracy and started a new conversation about the intention of the police. Well done SPD!
