The Sinead O’Connor Situation

Sinead O’ Connor

The Sinead O’Connor situation is… awful, and I don’t see this story having a happy ending. This year, we have lost many people in the music world, for diverse reasons and we are witnessing the continuous fall of another one and nobody seems to be doing anything? How many times does she have to disappear, how many suicides does she have to attempt before we can save her?

She disappeared once again over the weekend after a bike ride, and was found safe in a hotel about 24 hours later, but the amount of drama surrounding the story is quite alarming, just like the long post she wrote on her Facebook page. The problem about living in 2016 is that social media give to people like her a way to open up to the whole world, a way to expose, without any restriction, how insane, how lost they are, and it is heartbreaking.

Sinead’s post, that you can read here, is a personal letter filled with profanity and very personal stories addressed to her ex husband John Reynolds, it is a tortured rant where she insults every member of her family, her own son, her husband and her father, and it’s simply very painful to read stuff like:

‘So fucking live with that. Explain to Shane and Yeshua why Mum vanished. You unchristian, ungrateful, lying, criminal. YOu murdered your mother one way or the other. You drove her from her life so she had to run to another continent just to stay alive. You made her leave her babies and then you left them. YOU are the one who needs a fucking psychiatrist. All of you. ‘

‘You fucking best pray God kills me because unlike my poor mother, I will not let this drop. We are all going to court and we are gonna have this out in full public for once and for all.’

Reading it feels like pure voyeurism even though it is very difficult to make sense of anything she wrote. One thing is sure, this would have never been made public in a pre-internet age, she would have written this as an entry of her journal, may be as a letter or a note addressed to her ex-husband, and the public and her fans would have never read it. May be after her death if her ex is a Courtney Love type, but this is another story. Sinead’s mental illness is exposed to the world, she volunteers for it, her post has been shared a thousand times and reposted on a thousand of blogs and websites. This is the culmination of today’s endless appetite for gossips, people’s willingness to watch the destruction and auto-crucifixion of our rock stars. It is a sad time when Sinead O’ Connor will be more remembered for a cuss-word rant on Facebook than for her most successful hit ‘Nothing compares 2U’.
