The Roxy Turns 50: Neil Young Scheduled To Play This Fall At The Historic Venue

The Roxy Turns 50
The Roxy Turns 50

The Roxy, the legendary club on the Sunset Strip, has been part of LA’s music scene for a long time. This year the famous nightclub turns 50. Each time I go there I look at the black & white photographs on the walls of the entrance: everyone has performed there in the ‘70s and ‘80s, from Prince to Bob Marley, Springsteen, Van Morrison, Chuck Berry, Tina Turner, Linda Ronstadt, Frank Zappa, Genesis, Joe Cocker, Jimmy Cliff, Billy Joel, Smokey Robinson, The Ramones, Lou Reed, Dolly Parton, The Sex Pistols, The Cars, Devo, Talking Heads, The Clash, Aretha Franklin… Everyone has played at the Roxy which opened in 1973 with three Neil Young concerts supported by Graham Nash and the comedy duo Cheech & Chong.

Co-founder Lou Adler (89) – he also co-founded the groundbreaking Monterey International Pop Festival in 1967, was a talent manager, a record-label owner, and the producer of hits by Carole King and the Mamas & the Papas – has seen a lot of rockstars on this stage. Lou Adler wanted to create a “1940s nightclub” for rock, conveniently located next to the Rainbow Bar & Grill (Lemmy Kilmister’s second home). 50 is a remarkable number for a venue when so many have come and gone. With the Whisky A Go Go and the Troubadour, the Roxy is a piece of Los Angeles nightclub history. During the ‘70s, the club was even home to the stage musical “The Rocky Horror Show,” which Adler imported from the UK and every rock and movie star (John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Cher, Jack Nicholson…) was in the crowd for the opening night.  Remarkably, the Roxy remains a family business after all these years: if the booking is now handled by Goldenvoice, Adler says he is determined to keep it in the family, whereas many other popular clubs have been absorbed by Live Nation.

For this 50-year milestone, there is a celebration coming up: a series of Roxy50 honors and events scheduled for this fall. This will include a return engagement by Neil Young on September 20. Yes, Neil Young will play at the 500-seat-capacity nightclub, and tickets will be very easy to get (joking). I wonder who else will be on the bill for this 50th anniversary.

Beginning September 15, the Grammy Museum will also host an exhibit of photographs documenting the most famous performers who have played at the club, and the West Hollywood Library will host an exhibit of photographs.
