The Nominations For The 2022 Grammy Awards Are In

Grammy Awards
Japanese Breakfast is nominated

The Grammy Awards don’t really matter… but they do matter when you are nominated. I don’t pay much attention to the usual suspects, the Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Kanye West (shouldn’t they call him Ye now?), Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, Lil Nas X, and Olivia Rodrigo who are sucking all the oxygen (and money) from our current pop culture: they are collecting most of the nominations and will, without any doubt, bring a few awards homes. But I do care about the underdogs who are sometimes getting some recognition.

This year there are a few of them who rightly deserve to get noticed:

• Brandi Carlile: she is not really an underdog but she is far from being mainstream despite a performance on SNL. This year, her album “Right on Time” is nominated for Record of the Year, against the albums of Justin Bieber, Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X, and Olivia Rodrigo. She also has a nomination for Best Pop Solo Performance along pretty much the same people (Justin Bieber, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Olivia Rodrigo).

• Michelle Zauner, aka Japanese Breakfast, is nominated for Best New Artist, although she probably has no chance to win against FINNEAS. Her album “Jubilee” is also nominated for Best Alternative Music Album along with another good surprise: Vincent’s “Daddy’s Home”

• Black Pumas are nominated for Best Rock Performance along with AC/DC, Chris Cornell, Deftones, and Foo Fighters: Once again they have not even the slightest chance to win, but as a young band they must be very happy to be recognized among such legends… if you can call the Foo Fighters legends. Black Pumas do even better in the category Best Rock Album because theirCapitol Cuts – Live From Studio A” is nominated along with Paul McCartney’s “McCartney III”.

• I am also happy to see Valerie June’s “Call Me A Fool” nominated for Best American Roots Song, Bob Dylan must be smiling. Also, Los Lobos’ “Native Sons” is nominated for Best Americana Album, and Angelique Kidjo has two nominations (Best Global Music Performance and Best Global Music Album).

• Should I also mention Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’s nomination for Best Recording Package? Why is this even a thing?

There are nevertheless a few “controversial” nominations, like the ones of Marilyn Manson and DaBaby, both appearing on Kanye West’s “Donda,” which received a nomination for Album of the Year.” Because of a new amendment, they are eligible to pick up a Grammy. And to complete the canceled team, Louis C.K. is also nominated for Best Comedy Album, so the 2022 Grammys have the potential to piss off quite a few people.

However, I would say that one of the most outrageous things is probably the list of people who are nominated for one single album… more than 120 people worked on Justin Bieber’s as songwriters, producers, and recording engineers, whereas only 6 people were involved on Brandi Carlile’s album. Is that even fair?
