By a weird coincidence, I saw a film about a representation of this classic a few days ago, and the National has just announced the premiere of their musical, Cyrano de Bergerac, at Goodspeed Musicals’ series in Connecticut this summer.
How does a hip band get interested by a 19th century French play? May be just because Edmond Rostand’s text (which is all in verses) is still very brilliant, at every level.
In case you don’t know, the play, in five acts, tells the story of Cyrano de Bergerac, a strong and noble man, cadet in the army, who is also a brilliant poet. He is in love with his distant cousin, the beautiful Roxane, but because he has an extremely large and ugly nose, he believes he is too ugly to reveal her his love. Steve Martin had already adapted the play for his updated movie version, and his romantic comedy simply called ‘Roxanne’ was a great success in 1987.
The story is sweet and touching, and Cyrano is one of the most iconic character of French literature with too famous quotes to choose from, but one of my favorite declarations has to be: ‘A man doesn’t fight to win, and it’s even more beautiful when it’s useless’
However, Rostand’s text won’t be used in the musical, as Playbill is reporting that the play will be adapted by Erica Schmidt (writer and director of Off-Broadway’s All the Fine Boys) and will feature music by The National’s Aaron and Bryce Dessner and lyrics by Matt Berninger and his wife Carin Besser.
The production is set to run from August 3 to September 2nd and if you are in Connecticut, this could be an intersting thing to check out
