I am as excited by this news as I am about the new Star Wars movie… it is so déjà-vu that it is not even news, but here it is, you will be able to stream the music of the Beatles for Christmas’ eve!
It is still unclear which streaming services will have this privilege but it is apparently a done deal. None of the services, from Spotify to Tidal, Deezer has made any comment when the news was announced, but according to Billboard, most of them ‘if not all, will have access to the band’s catalog of studio albums next week’. Talks with Universal Music Group, who owns the catalog, began in January, and an agreement was made in September.
As we know, it took years for the Beatles’ catalogue to arrive on iTunes, but when they joined the club, they sold 2 millions songs during the first week! Logically, it took them even longer to join the streaming club, the next step in music business.
This will certainly not change anything for people of my generation, we have been raised with the Beatles, and we own, one way or another, about everything they have ever recorded, we even bought the original vinyl! Plus, you can already stream thousands of live songs on YouTube,… although the recorded ones are regularly removed, people keep uploading them! The Beatles are everywhere, they are even on Pandora, so what could this new move change in anyone’s life? A new generation is not going to discover the Beatles because they are now on Spotify!
Speaking of Spotify, Paul McCartney once withdrew all of his music from Rhapsody and Spotify but he changed his mind and you can now find his entire catalogue (Wings included) on Spotify…
So who is still resisting? Even Radiohead’s catalogue is there at a few inexplicable exceptions… where is ‘In Rainbows’? Taylor Swift has refused to be on Spotify but she doesn’t count because her music is on Rhapsody, Tidal and Beats Music. Pretty soon everyone and everything will be available everywhere.
