The Early Bird: Top New Releases 5-11-18 – 5-17-18 Reviewed

Antipathy towards the Arctic Monkeys goes without saying except on the way to the hanging I found the moody, downbeat Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino an enticing piece of  irresistible career hari kari. Plus, Alex Turner is in excellent voice (Grade: B+). Meanwhile two Soundcloud Rappers (? – Broward County weirdos) have their post breakthrough albums, Playboy Carti’s more than lit list of featured artists from Skepta (!) to Young Thug (not as !) on the not bad at all Die Lit (Grade: B) and Ski Mask The Slump God ‘s BEWARE THE BOOK OF ELI EP iis a featureless piece of mumble rap that if he could come close to it on stage might make him major (Grade: B+). Otherwise, major new releases from Charlie Puth, Voicenotes, are pop soul as written (Grade: C+) and Beach House’s 7, a majorly gorgeous dreamscape shoegaze entry (Grade: B+).

On to singles where you will find a lot more action this week. Alphabetically inclined: Amy Grant’s “Say It With A Kiss” is a lovely country pop move piece of hippieish advise (Grade: B), if it ain’t Becky G then it must be Karol G performing first rate Latin pop on the addictive “Mi Cama” (Grade: B+). Lori McKenna’s moving “People Get Old” is a country Americana touching sound of the obvious yet fresh comment (Grade: B+) . Has anybody misjudge her gifts as thoroughly as Meghan Trainor, the chorus is catchy on “Let You Be  Right” but we expect more from Meghan (Grade: B-). Ne-Yo was on his way to becoming the GOAT of soul singers, it didn’t happen and “Apology” doesn’t help (Grade: C+), Noah Cyrus newbie “Team” is sweet in a meh sort of way (Grade: C+). “Seven Nation Army” (From Westworld: Season 2) by Ramin Djawadi adds sitar to the sound and lets the bass deal Jack White’s huge beat (Grade: B+), on Rita Ora’s “Girls” she brings together Cardi B, Charli XCX,  and Bebe Rexha, on this interestingly flawed superstar summit -the back up harmonies are very good (Grade: B).

Anything else? I haven’t included what I think may be the album of the week, and Frozen: The Broadway Musical (Original Broadway Cast Recording)? Yeah, that bad (Grade: C-)
