The Early Bird: Top New Recorded Releases 9-30-22 – 10-6-22 Reviewed

No, I never even tried to do A&R and it is a good thing I didn’t, which doesn’t mean I would have not have picked Morgan Whallen’s friend Hardy as a potential superstar. I still do. His latest hard rocker, “Jack”, is a masterpiece that puts indie rockers (with the exception of Titus Andronicus) to shame: a perfect, arrogant, guitar smashing masterpiece and one of the best songs of the year.

Speaking of Titus Andronicus, let’s move to albums: I reviewed the inconsistently rock genre busting The Will To Live earlier today (here) (Grade: A-), Bjork may well be a musical genius but strip away the world of singing cucumbers in the sea vibe and what you are left with is yet another difficult to access album Fossara and I am tired enough of this electronic whistle and toot that I wish she’d go back to “Human Behavior” even the Serpentwithfeet track has no sweet spot (Grade: C+), supergroup OFF! return with Free LSD in a prog thought, heavy punk killer sound, apparently it is a space opera about aliens rebuilding your record collection but that needn’t bother us here (Grade: B+). I never really bought into the final stand of New York rock circa 2000, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs certainly have some great songs in their catalog, “Maps” comes to mind, their first album in eight years is alright psyche rock belligerence, try “Different Today” (Grade: B-), Dropkick Murphy’s This Machine Still Kills Fascists add music to Woody Guthrie words and it is better than anything except Mermaid Avenue (Grade: B+).

Back to singles, Bob Harris was the MC of The Old Grey Whistle Test and if ever a music show could do with a whole lotta archive releases, to start with this live “Kooks” is pretty excellent (Grade: A), since Victoria has no need to return to Spice Girls to either tour or record , this remix of the SpiceWorld track will have to do (Grade: B-), Paramore return after Hayley’s solo efforts sunk like a stone, the truth is while “This Is Why” is a pretty good rocker riffo it can’t compare to “Still Into You” (Grade: B-), Tegan and Sara are the Indigo Girls without the sadness overwhelming them and the three songs we have heard off the upcoming album are all good, especially the addictive “I Can’t Grow Up” (Grade: B)
