The Early Bird: Top New Recorded Releases 8-26-22 – 9-1-22 Reviewed

As in “Hold Me Closer” tiny dancer, as in Elton pulls a similar trick to his smash hit “Cold Heart” rework of “Rocket Man”. A duet with an underused Britney Spears though the actual sampling is beautiful and the song isn’t bad (Grade: A-).

Still on singles, Madonna’s daughter Lolahol debuts with a piece of electronic pop vaguely reminiscent of Ray Of Light (Grade: B), “Weird Goodbyes” is a single? The National and Bon Iver join together for a deep album cut (Grade: C), the absolutely gorgeous “Calm Down” is Rema’s Afrobeats in service to a lility, Caribbean flowing, beauty (Grade: B+), I reviewed the album “Pretty Girls” was pulled from at the beginning of the month (here) , and forty something years later it remains a crystalline and genius piano lick, earworm of astonishing sweetness and catchiness… I will get around to a complete review (I’ve been ill all week) but for now? (Grade: A).

Over at albums, I reviewed the disco diva moodiness of Clare Grogan of Altered Images 39 years later on her new Mascara Streakz earlier today (here), Anitta added five songs to the already best Latin pop via Brazil around on Versions Of Me and only improves the hit after hit album (Grade: B+), Bastille have extended their Give Me The Future by adding another entire album to it Dreams Of The Past , I guess “Distorted Light Beam” isn’t terrible (Grade: C+), only DJ Khaled could get everyone from Jay-Z to SZA and still gives us a dog with fleas (Grade: D+), there are many terrible dance bands from the UK but surely Steps deserves their own little corner of hell as an atonal five piece of oversinging over disco generic (Grade: C-)

Mascara Streakz – Altered Images – B

Versions Of Me (Deluxe) – Anitta – B+

Give Me The Future + Dreams Of The Past – Bastille – C+

Hold Me Closer – Elton John, Britney Spears – A-

GOD BE – DJ Khaled – D+

Lock&Key – Lolahol – B

Pretty Girls – Randy Edelman – A

Calm Down (with Selena Gomez) – Rema – B+

Platinum Collection – Steps – C-

Weird Goodbyes (feat. Bon Iver) – The National, Bon Iver – C
