The Early Bird: Top New Recorded Releases 8-19-22 – 8-25-22 Reviewed

The soulful giant has been circling the big time for a coupla years and releasing major soul pop works one after another, “I’m Pressed”‘s drums are too heavy, the electronics too front and center and the song a close miss, but it is still Josiah Wise and still more than good enough (Grade: B).

Still with singles, Billy Idol and Steve Strange on “Caged” -a hard rocking anthem (Grade: B), if Red Hot Chili Peppers had been playing MSG not Metlife I would have gone but not with too much joy, “Tippa My Tongue” owes its existence to Flea’s walking bassline and has nothing else to recommend it (Grade: C+) , John Coltrane’s before he headed into the wilds of jazz recorded the 1958 Blue Train and apparently they are working on an expanded addition to follow up the 2003 expanded addition, with Coltrane more is more on “Blue Train – Alternate Take 8” (Grade: A), it’s been a quiet year for the K-Pop superstars BLACKPINK, but this rap and Middle Eastern flavored sing and rap track is worth the wait even for a non-believer (Grade: B+), PJ Harvey returns with a Leonard Cohen cover “Who By Fire” for the Apple+ series “Bad Sisters” and at the very least it isn’t the usual Cohen (Grade: B).

Over at albums I reviewed Ryan Adam’s third album of the year, the classic rock FM (here) (Grade: B), Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones is Madonna with a first rate collection of remixes , per Wikipedia “The album includes all of Madonna’s dance number ones, with the exception of “Causing a Commotion”, as well as one song each from her two double A-side number ones, “Lucky Star” (paired with “Holiday”) and “Angel” (paired with “Into the Groove”). Before the chart’s rules were changed in February 1991 to disallow whole albums from charting, the whole of Madonna’s 1987 remix album You Can Dance topped the chart; three of that album’s seven standard tracks are included. The album also features five previously unreleased remixes—”Keep It Together”, “American Life”, “Nothing Fails”, “Turn Up the Radio”, and “Living for Love”—by Felix da Housecat, Tracy Young, and Offer Nissim. Madonna herself curated the remix collection..” (Grade: A), the six song Eric Church middle of “rock” and “Soul” known as “&” is just fine and a welcome addition (Grade: B+), Demi Lovato has been getting her pop punk on this year and her new album, Holy Fvck is perfectly modulated female confessional with melody and rock though could use a coupla more potential hits (Grade: B)
