The Early Bird: Top New Recorded Releases 7-29-22 – 8-4-22

When Playboy Carti and Lil Uzi Vert were coming up, Carti was the star but Lil Uzi Vert was beloved by his fans and Lil Uzi’s latest, the gorgeous trap, autotune, cool emo Red And White EP is a nine song, 33 minute peak art less is more, which equals pink so we are still awaiting the album (Grade: A-).

Still on albums, I reviewed Beyonce’s dance album Renaissance earlier today (here) a good album missing that one song (trust me, “Break My Soul” ain’t it) (Grade: B+), Amanda Shire can play a fiddle but her classic rock meets country (does that mean Americana?) is a drag and the highly rated Take It Like A Man is painfully smig and bluesy (Grade: C-), moving on to girls who like girls: King Princess is the Princess who has failed to live up to her potential, though the new Hold Me Baby changes the trajectory and while it doesn’t include the heights of “The 1950s'” or “Pussy Is King”, it is her best album by a long shot and “I Hate Myself, I Want To Party” (co-written by Aaron Dessner!) is as good as it gets (Grade: B+), on the other hand pop dance artist Hayley Kiyoko is always on her game and her game is girls and PANORAMA is a wide visage of romance well worth exploring (Grade: B+).

Over at singles, I reviewed April Rose Gabrielli’s serious contender for single of the year, “I Woke Up Alive”, earlier today (here), the great Rosalia’s (I am currently obsessing about getting a tix to see her at Radio City in September), loosie is a good dance all over your exes “DESPECHÁ” (Grade: B),the Roy Orbison of indie Eric Contractor with a Scott Walker-y goth beauty on “If I Had Her” (Grade: B+), co -written by Blake Mills, Marcus Mumford goes solo on “Grace”… the Steven Spielberg directed video isn’t much either (Grade: C-), the Blur drummer Dave Roundtree is nearly as tedious as the lead singer of Blur’s solo work on “London Bridge” (Grade: D+), in his first solo work since 2016 Brian Eno fails to realize that boring us to death is no way to effect climate change (Grade: D)
