The Early Bird: Top New Recorded Releases 5-6-22 – 5-12-22 Reviewed

Freedy Johnston has had “There Goes A Brooklyn Girl” in his back pocket since at least 2017, but hasn’t dropped it, or dropped an album either, in seven years. It’s a long time between recordings for the man who sold his family farm to pay the band. Mores the pity on the hook laden, guitar ringing, sure sounds like Freedy “Brooklyn Girl”. A top class coulda been a contender that currently has zero views on youtube., the song has a late night dreaminess and is yet another one where you have to write about something, it has the unmistakable Freedy spot on-ness (Grade: A-)

Still on-ness singlewise, Taylor Swift “Taylor’s Version” reaches the end of act one of her career, 1989, where she hit heights she never hit again with “Shake It Off” and “Blank Space” and also reached a dreary middle ground that took her three albums to recover from. Neither “Wildest Dreams”(Grade: C+) nor “This Love” (Grade: C) were particularly strong to start and the Taylor’s Version take adds less than she did on TVs albums earlier in her career. As long as we are doubling down, Bryan Ferry has always been excellent at a cover and here he does emotional dramatic heartache “I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself” (Grade: B) and the title track of the upcoming album “Love Letters” (Grade: B), the leader of Madness, Suggs, and the leader of The Jam, Paul Weller, join up for some Beatley Penny Lain-ey goes to Camden, “OOH DO U FINK U R” (Grade: B).

Over at albums, I reviewed Arcade Fire’s failure to launch We earlier today (here) (Grade: C-), Bad Bunny surprise drops his fourth album Un Verano Sin Ti (translation: A Summer Without You) built for warm Caribbean days and nights, a sound he has messed with before but with an added calypso side on songs like “Después de la Playa” on the huge 81 minute arrival (Grade: A), I’ve dutifully listened to Sharon Van Etten for over a decade but after Remind Me Tomorrow failed to click back in 2019 I figure she was just too much of a downer and We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong is a drag even when she gets a little energy a third of the way through, “I’ll Try” is the best of the lot (Grade: C), Belle And Sebastian are what they are, an over populated commune of folk poppers who never got better than Sinister and don’t on A Bit Of Previous (Grade: C) , just before the 2020 lockdown I caught Silverstein just before the 2020 lockdown (here) and unanointed them as my go to post-hardcore band, though they sure have their moments and if nothing else, and even if generic, Misery Made Me is filled with major strong songs to slit your wrists to (Grade: B+)
