The Early Bird: Top New Recorded Releases 4-1-22 – 4-7-22 Reviewed

At 76 minutes it goes on for a year or two, and nobody would mistake it for Californication by any stretch, but Red Hot Chili Pepper’s Ultimate Love is the ultimate so-so RHCP album, nothing is GREAT, there is no “This Is The Place”, but very few songs that are rotten and “Let Em Cry” is as good as they get (Grade: B-).

Staying with albums, Ryan Adams third and best party of the trilogy, Chris, reaches streaming services and is a classic rock plus heartbroken masterpiece (Grade: A), dead at the age of 40 in a plane crash, Jim Reeves was country lite but the countrypolitan surges on something like “He’ll Have To Go”, The Home Recordings are near his last days (one of them, “Hit Parade” was the last song her recorded, the home demos feel very close to complete and remind you how wonderful a singer he was (Grade: A), recorded live this year during Superbowl weekend, with a song set chosen by fanclub members through three giant tracks, “The Climb”, “Wrecking Ball X Nothing Compares 2 U” and “Party In The USA” at the end, I’ve never been crazy about her voice but I’ve liked her otherwise and ATTENTION: MILEY LIVE is a pretty good live album (Grade: B), really? after ten years of twiddling our pubes she gives us 25 songs of acoustic takes on her catalog, and misses just about all my faves and especially “The French Song” (remember: “I have to laugh out loud when you say three’s a crowd”) (Grade: C+), J. Cole, Ari Lennox, J.I.D., Ari Lennox, EARTHGANG, Bas, Cozz, Lute and Omen — and contributions from A$AP Ferg, 2 Chainz, Sheck Wes, G Perico, Young Nudy, Kenny Mason and REASON on D-Day: A Gangsta Grillz Mixtape … and yet while some of the flows are great it is awful been there done that for J. Cole’s crew (Grade: C+)

Over at singles, I reviewed Harry Styles synthpop single of the year “As It Was” earlier today (here) (Grade: A), here is 90s rocker Liam Gallagher generic “C’Mon You Know” (Grade: C), here is 60s rock with “Strange Game” bluesy rocker from Mick Jagger and it is alright though it sure isn’t “Memo From Turner” (Grade: C+), and as long as we dealing with white men, Lyle Lovett returns after a decade with an awful country snooze “12th Of June” (I could explain the title but who gives a shit (Grade: C), Shawn Mendes can’t believe Camila dumped him, and to be honest neither can I though he claims so on “When You’re Gone”; it’s sad, all those photo ops gone forever (Grade: C-).
