The Early Bird: Top New Recorded Releases 11-11-22 – 11-17-22 Reviewed

At twelve years into his career, Afrobeats Nigerian superstar Wizkid was awarded best newcomer by Apple in 2021, in 2020 he broke Western pop with Made In Lagos, and today he has dropped More Love, Less Ego, a set of African r&b love songs and pop with a very steady beat, a major work from the arriviste at 32 years of age (Grade: A-).

Over to singles, Kim Petras has broken through a minority transgender cult to the mainstream after her Sam Smith duet “Unholy” got to # 1, the pleasantly sacrilegious “If Jesus Was A Rock Star” is very good in its own pop mainstream mode (Grade: B), Gina Birch, The Raincoat singer, joins with Youth of Killing Joke for a powerful. somewhat brutish, mainstream rock plus sound effects (Grade: B), spoken word-rap star Kae Tempest, on one of his most musical tracks with an addictive rhythm clicking and a fine other rapper in Kojey Radical (Grade: B+), the second single from Brockhampton’s upcoming final album release, “The Ending” finds Kevin Abstract with a minor self-portrait (Grade: B), the always welcome Channel Tres goes disco on “6am” (Grade: B).

Back to albums, I reviewed Bruce Springsteen’s soul covers Only The Strong Survive earliest today (here) (Grade: B+), there is no reason not to love Louis Armstrong flirting with Velma Middleton, but Louis Wishes You a Cool Yule is a compilations of very oldies, it concludes with Pops reading “A Visit From St. Nicholas” and while a touch on the why? side, if you must hear “Winter Wonderland” by all means let it be from Louis Armstrong (Grade: B+), if life seems a little quiet on the Latin pop front, Danny Ocean, the very popular Venezuelan South American star, does less well in the English speaking world but it’s difficult to see why on this start of the art, very addictive Latin beats and sweet sounds on @dannocean (Grade: B+). Finally, Depeche Mode return to the first album with the classic trio Playing The Angel and release a compiliation of remixes and twelve inchers (Grade: B)

The Ending – Brockhampton – B+

Only The Strong Survive – Bruce Springsteen – B+

6am – Channel Tres – B+

@dannocean – Danny Ocean – B+

Playing The Angel | The 12″ Singles – Depeche Mode – B

Wish I Was You – Gina Birch – B

Move Rework (with Kojey Radical) – Kae Tempest – B+

If Jesus Was A Rockstar – Kim Petras – B

Louis Wishes You a Cool Yule – Louis Armstrong – B+

More Love, Less Ego – Wizkid – B+
