The Early Bird: Top New albums 8-4-23 – 8-10-23 Reviewed

Across The Sheets – Brett Young – I saw Brett opening for a different Brett and Luke (no, the other one) and he was the opening act and not bad but not quite up to MSG, and nothing on the album, soupy country ballads and an occasional country rocker changes that estimation. By the way, Brett is 42 years old which means his country heartthrob days are coming to an end… and the last thing “Don’t Take The Girl” is a goodie – C+

The Complete Fun Boy Three – Fun Boy Three – a return to the early 80s, probably an informal tribute to Terry Hall, the Specials and later Fun Boy Three lead singer who passed last year. Quirkier, maybe I mean experimental, than I remembered and wth 69 songs here a lot more prolific than I knew – B-

Evenings At The Village Gate: John Coltrane with Eric Dolphy (Live) – Coltrane isn’t the greatest jazz musician of all time, but he may be the greatest saxophonist and this newly discovered set with alto sax Eric Dolphy from his stand in 1961 – A

Sweet Memories: The Music Of Ray Price & The Cherokee Cowboys – Vince Gill, Paul Franklin -the duo’s second album together, following the covers album Bakersfield, mining the famous country sound that brought us Buck Owens, here they take on Ray “For The Good Times” Price, though they ignore his bigger hits for a deep dive and god knows, better Ray Price than the Eagles. Superb session guitarist and best country singer since George Jones left us have nothing to prove but prove it anyway – A-

You Are Who You Hang Out With – The Front Bottoms – The last indie band in town, the duo always seemed drowsy to me, the problem is Brian Sella’s vocals are so unique, sound like nobody else at all, without being very good. The songs are all indie rock self-satisfaction – C+
