The Early Bird: Top New Album Releases 6-30-23 – 7-6-23 Reviewed

Anthology – Charlie Watts – The late Rolling Stones drummer was half of the best rhythm section in the business but his first love was jazz and not rock and roll. Here his jazz side is compiled with live action from 1978, 1986, 1991 and 2001 as well as studio recordings. It is fun stuff, and as good a closer as we could hope for a legendary craer – B+

Gag Order (Live Acoustic EP From Space) – Kesha – now Dr. Luke is in her rearview mirror the question becomes how good is she? she is great, she was great at Hammerstein back in 2017 (here) and her last album was terrific and this acoustic EP is just awesome, a catchy earworm of post-childhood – A-

Pink Tape – Lil Uzi Vert – trap beats and emo vibes by the very popular live act, last emo rapper (well, second to last -lest we forget Trippie Redd), with an over long (76 minutes!) set of songs that seem to be stalling, his melodic sensibility is weaker and while it is a good album, the third one is often difficult and this one is too much of a good thing – B

Destination Düsseldorf – Skids – “brand new studio album from Scotland’s legendary Skids. The band note Europe as an ongoing inspiration for the new LP; “from the beauty of the Renaissance to the savagery of many wars, the highs and lows have been from there as an ongoing and ever evolving influence. This new album follows in the footsteps of Days In Europa as a celebration of friendship and shared experiences.” The first time I heard it I drew the conclusion it was an oldie from the early 80s, but it is currently rock and synth new romantic harbinger and it hangs exceedingly well. From Screaming Tarts: “Skids front man Richard Jobson says “I think the band have really caught what we’re all about in this recording. It feels fresh but never wanders too far from our love of anthems with energy. It feels like we’ve just started out rather than being part of a nostalgia trip. I can’t wait to start playing these songs live.” The Skids were formed in 1977 by Richard Jobson, alongside Stuart Adamson, Bill Simpson, & Tom Kellichan. Perhaps best known for their ’79 top ten hit ‘Into The Valley’, they became a major influence on later bands like Green Day and Manic Street Preachers.” – B+
