The Early Bird: New Recorded Releases 10-14-22 – 10-20-22

ATL’s last man standing, Lil Baby, outdid everyone from Migos to DaBaby and reigns as a top trap popstar on his latest album It’s Only Me, and while it is too obvious to be the 4 times platinum ,major breakthrough My Turn which took him off the drip and into mainstream trap; It’s Only Me is great rapping but the beats are missing, still “California Breeze” is so good it carries the album with skills (Grade: B+).

Moving to singles, Revolver is the second best Beatles album of all time (A Hard Day’s Night beats it out… and not by much), Take 1 of “Tomorrow Never Knows” has the vocals about right even as they fiddle with the backing tracks electronic drugginess, they could have used this take and not missed much (Grade: A+), sneak out in 2019, this is the official release of the late Emogreat Juice Wrld, and the mellow marsh on a by the numbers “Bye Bye” (Grade: B+), I saw the original line up in 1999 at the Dysfunctional Family Picnic from K-Rock, almost a blast of what’s my age again back when it was verifiable on the Enema tour, since then meh, they just haven’t had the spark and the new single “Edging” with cancer survivor Tom DeLonge on pleasantly ordinary pop punk, and Bruce Springsteen fails to hit paydirt on his Commodores cover “Nightshift” (Grade: B-).

Over to albums, I reviewed the concentrated intelligence of The 1975’s fifth album, the fine Being Funny In A Foreign Language (here) (Grade: A-), Florence + The Machine perform the latest album plus some oldies on Dance Fever (Live At Madison Square Garden) and your opinion will have an enormous amount to do with how much the liked the latest album (Grade: C), Sting’s second solo album, …Nothing Like The Sun is given the deluxe version so you can ignore it all except “Englishman IN New York” (Grade: D+), same old Red Hot Chili Peppers on their second double album of the year, I wasn’t crazy about the first one but Return of the Dream Canteen puts me right to sleep, same old hard rock, funky, death inducing tedium with Rick Rubin producing (Grade: D+), Here It Is: A Tribute to Leonard Cohen is perfect if you are in the market for Sarah McLachlan trying her hand at “Hallelujah” (Grade: C)
