The Earliest Bird: Top Recorded Release For 12-3-21 – 12-9-21. Arca’s kick ii, iii, iiii, iiiii, Reviewed

Arca is Alejandra Ghersi, the Venezuelan DJ, Producer, arranger, composer, hyperpopstar, who continues the electronic pop weirdness covering so much ground, exemplified by the late Sophie. Arca’s EP Madre has been one of the best sounds of 2021 for months and months. Though it is easier to love Arca over a four song EP even if it is longer than most of the albums she dropped over the last coupla days kick ii, iii, iiii, iiiii. Added together there are over 40 songs and over two hours of music.

There is a reason why Arca is more prolific as a pop star than most, more in the nature of a rap producer who plays in musical textures and doesn’t necessarily have to worry about the nuts and bolts of song construction, it is simply a faster process.

In today’s Guardian (here), Alexis Petridis makes a valid case for the four albums to be a tip toe into the mainstream, ii includes an actual shoulda been a contender track featuring Sia, “Born Yesterday” and “Prada/Arcata” is hyperpop as Latin trap, the rest are weirdo sound effects rules. iii sounds like bizarre dance music in a cuisinart, iiii is less poppy with the estimable planningtorock on the anthem to otherness “Queer” and Shirley Manson on the take no prisoners, Dr. Who style woozed traction “Alien Inside”. iiiii, by being more straightforward and analog, sounds like a hyperclassical, piano based low key beauty, with Ryuichi Sakamoto (of Yellow Magic Orchestra) is here, if you have a problem with the difficult to penetrate Arca, try “Chiquito”.

But try something, I’m not sure how, even with Charlie XCX working the umps, hyperpop will break mainstream -though I was wrong about bass n drums and trap beats. Whether it does or not, the state of pop art is somewhere in Arca’s sound…
