Itt opens in a graveyard then moves to a mausoleum and back to a graveyard. Takeoff’s accidental shooting and death on November 1st was possibly the biggest loss since the 90s. Yes, black male rappers die constantly (it must be like being in the armed forces) as poverty, drugs, and rap came together and took over the world. It is hard to get the rapper off the streets when the streets is where they gain their authority.
While “Rap Capital” doesn’t agree, the current state of Atlanta as rap capital is much about T.I. and Gucci Mane, who ruled in the mid-00s till a string of altercations found him in and out of prison. Meanwhile, the same men who made Quality Music Record Label discovered Migos and the trio became close to Mane. Both somewhat dangerous, of the eleven rappers no longer on Quality Music, four are deceased. A 60% survival rate ain’t much.
But Takeoff took off and Migos went from opening for Future to opening for (wait for it) Drake. Migos were huge, all top ten songs on Spotify are in the 500 Million stream mark and”Bad And Boujee” is near a billion.
The death seriously shook up Atlanta (and world) rap and Mane was shaken to the core, his response was the devastating “Memento Mori” “Letter To Takeoff” which features Gucci wandering around near the place Takeoff is buried and the music by producer Zaytoven is funereal in its sad lethargy, the trap beats drag the song to a near halt and Gucci has never sounded realer or more important. An off the cuff diss of Herschel Walker is just to keep your attention!
