The Earliest Bird; Top New Recorded Releases 9-23-22 – 9-29-30, “Use To Be The Playa” by Morris Day (featuring Snoop Dogg), Reviewed

Morris Day has announced his retirement after the 2023 tour, maybe helped along by the Estate of Prince’s despicably announcing to The Time leader earlier this year that he can no longer use the name Morris Day And The TIme in any capacity (or maybe he can lease it from, ahem time to time) though he said to Yahoo’s Gail Mitchell (here) that he is retiring as a solo act not as a member of The Time so… Prince and Morris were friends since High School, and performed together in Grand Central as teens. When Prince hit it big he helped Morris manage his public image and gave him and the band the role of the villain in “Purple Rain”.

Morris Day hasn’t released a new album since 2004 and nobody doubts how important Prince (who performed every instrument on “The Bird”) was to Day, but if he is still working and if you are not Prince himself, don’t do what Prince didn’t do.

Anyway, Day is returning to us, he dropped “Grown Man” with Big Daddy Kane but the real return to full strength is the wonderful r&b essentially duet with Snoop Dogg “Use To Be The Playa”, Snoop gets the first shot at it with the future explanation of what happens when your gigolo is really lonely, “I coach”. Over a terrific groove, Morris and Snoop take the metaphor (basketball playa) as far as it goes with Snoop rapping between and around Morris’s singing. It is a real thrill and if it doesn’t make your life it should surely make your day.
