The Earliest Bird: Top New Recorded Release 9-16-22 – 9-22-22, Jessie Reyez’s “Yessie” Reviewed

Jessie Reyez, the Canadian soul singer, came on the scene back in 2017 with the EP Kiddo, and she came fully formed. Her Gov Ball set, the first one in 2017 (here), was the opening set of the day and a sparkling continuation of everything we love about her and by her 2019 set she was already a star (here), the voice: That rasping undertow is such a draw, so bruised and beautiful, needy and fearless.

Her first album, released at the start of the pandemic in 2020 Before Love Came To Kill Us was excellent, the mix of happiness and sorry and acoustic guitar and electronic soul music and always that voice, was sublime but the timing fucked it. That isn’t true of her sophomore effort, the sublime YESSIE. It reaches a zenith with the glorious Folk Americana as soul “EMOTIONAL DETACHMENT DEMO” and the wonderfully and awesome conclusion of the album, the Spanish language “ADIÓS AMOR”.

But you could start anywhere on YESSIE and keep on going in a loop of the eleven songs, go to the 6Lack feature “FOREVER” and keep on going to the odd soul meets Burt Bacharach “QUEEN ST. W”, then the glorious Jessie plus strings in the tempo changing “MUTUAL FRIEND”; it is all wonderful.

Jessie has produced an excellent set of sexual and romantic submission and domination, it is as good as Kiddo. She will be at Hammerstein Ballroom December 4th, a must see.

Grade: A
