The Earliest Bird: Top New Recorded Release 11-25-22 – 12-1-22, Jimi Hendrix And Zayn’s “Angel” Reviewed

When the English Pakistani (a minority whose treatment by the UK has been racist in the extreme) Zayn Malik was the first to leave One Direction big things were predicted for the man. But the wages of fame left him paralyzed between racist trollers and 20 something social influencers.

The result was a sound that certainly wasn’t coming together and highlighted by Zayn suffering a major strain of stage fright and refusing to go on stage at a radio fest, left him a little forgotten. And then the all too typical wife beating, drug taking, anger erupting Zayn gave way to Harry.

So, a coupla years later Zayn took his glorious vocals and added it to the original Hendrix riff of “Angel” in celebration of what would have been Jimi’s 80th birthday. If Jimi’s loss was a tragedy, Zayn’s was just sad, he couldn’t maintain his equilibrium on the precipice of pain between racist UK and immigrant family. But perhaps Malik couldn’t sing it with such a cracked beauty if the feelings flew by him: Hendrix wrote “the song”angel” about a dream he had of his mother as a child in the midst of a far less than idyllic boydom. Jimi’s mama died of alcoholism at the age of 33, Jimi was all of sixteen and his father refused to let him go to the funeral, instead served Jimi and his brother Levon shots of whisky saying that’s how men dealt with grief. The song is beautiful and also, composed four months before Jimi’s own death, it seconds as an omen, twelve years after his mother’s death, she came back to collect him.

Zayn’s mother is an English woman who changed her religion to Islam after marrying Zayn’s father and Zayn is a product of an interfaith marriage, and Zayn has that best of all words prettiness, His mother wants him to move back home… Between the two men, women, mother’s, try to save them.

As for “Angel”, I can’t see how it can be a hit but it sure deserves to be.

Grade: A
