In 2020, April Rose Gabrielli got stymied via the pandemic on her solo career trajectory before she re-emerged in Spring 2021 with, in quick succession, the theme song of a documentary, a first single on Soho Records, a classic set at The Bitter End, a second single, an announced tour, and today dropped a mammoth anthem for the hard worn fighters with a break that is more than fun, “When you fall down, get up, pick yourself up” should have you get down get up and roar in 2022.
After April’s relatively straightforward “Bad Habits” earlier this year the question emerged as to what performer she was going to be, it takes a certain gift to write (co-write, with the great in his own right, right on Kulick) a song that hits that earworm with a sledgehammer. This month we’ve gotten a coupla classic pop songs, Harry Styles’ “As It Was” and Father John Misty’s “Goodbye Mr. Blue” are the two best songs of the year and they are now followed by “Need A Break” -a song that just thrills. From April’s quietly lovely verses that explode on the chorus with a choir of April’s harmonizing and finally a break in a league with Harry’s bridge. This is April’s great gifts, she never forgets indelible tunefulness and she never ever composes one hook on a song where three will suffice; it is a monster of a track.
Gabrielli is performing at Cafe What on May 18th (tickets here) and I can’t wait to hear “Need A Break” -a song that both wants and provides one- in person.
