The Big Huerta Jumps Back With James Brown, It’s Getting Too Funky in Here, Parts I & II

butanejames 003b
Where were you in 1965? I was four years old and I swear remember being parked with the entire family in the car in Los Angeles at either a bowling alley or a supermarket and “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” came on the local am radio station. Could a song really have this much effect on a four year old? Am I confused? Maybe it was 1966, I don’t remember…Where’s Maceo?? Maceo can you help us out here? Maceo…Hit me!…Yeeeeahh Yeeeeahh..ungh Popcorn! Good God y’all..Hot Pants, take it to the bridge..shall I take it to the bridge??? Hit me band! That’s where I am…The big payback..gimme those hits…I want some hits..Watch me! I got it! Watch me! I got soul and I’m super bad! I jump back I want to kiss myself! Open up the window, it’s too funky in here! I need a little air fresh’ner…under the drums..UH! You see man made the car to take us over the road…man made the train to carry the heavy get up offa that thing and dance until you feel better..get up offa that thing y’all..Maceo, Maceo..stay on the scene like a sex gotta have the feeling sure as you’re born…ain’t nothin’ goin’ on now but the rent-ah..a whole lotta bills and my money’s spent mmm and that’s on the bad foot! Ain’t that a groove…ain’t that a groove..Maceo…Think about the good things baby…Think about the wrong things maybe..Everbody doing the popcorn but me..Livin’ in America…hit me! Uh, with your bad self..Say it louder (I got a mouth)..So nice, so nice, I got you…baby baby baby, baby baby baby…uh, good God..I got the feeling..Ha Good God! So good ha! Everybody ready?! Maceo…He’s doing the jerk, he’s doing the fly, don’t play him cheap cause you know he ain’t shy…Maceo take it to the bridge…give the drummer some yeah yeah yeah…Popcorn! Good God! Maceo…

There aren’t too many artists where you can just write bits of lyrics and the funk pumps through. I am sure most everyone reading this knows the full on history of JB. So I will spare the verbosity of it all. James Brown was the one and only Soul Brother Number One, the hardest working man in show business, Mr. Dynamite, The amazing Mr. Please, Please, Please…and who hasn’t mimicked the exhausted stagger and the throwing off of a cape or towel in the privacy of your own home??? “Who needs to think when your feet just go? James Brown, James Brown James Brown James Brown” sang The Tom Tom Club on their hit “Genius of Love”. The line of funk can directly be drawn from Butane James, no questions, no denials! James came to the party, good God, James started the party! Do you think I dig James Brown??? I used to try to dance like James circa The TAMI Show when I was young. I had a James Brown sticker (made by Don Butler) on my Honda Civic hatchback when James was in jail and it wasn’t cool! James Brown is the sound! Maceo, carry me home…

I took this painting from the LP cover “Can Your Heart Stand it” on Solid Smoke Records. It is done in oil…titled “Butane James” I had to surround him with the Flames..even alight in his immaculate hairdo..This probably won’t be the last painting I do of Mr. Dynamite. It was the last of 2015 but the first ARTicle of 2016…James Brown, earned every minute of it!
