The Bellwether, A New LA Music Venue, Will Open Next Month!

The Bellwether

It’s official, there is a new music venue in town, and it’s called The Bellwether. Located at 333 S. Boylston St (just west of downtown LA), the independent venue is operated by Michael Swier (the owner of two other cool LA venues, the Teragram Ballroom and the Moroccan Lounge) in partnership with Another Planet Entertainment (APE). Since a few independent venues closed during the pandemic, this is great news.

Today, they announced their upcoming schedule for the summer, and it looks like Phantogram will be the inaugural show on July 11, followed by many other artists including Panda Bear, Haim, Andrew Bird, Santigold, Tegan and Sara, Carly Rae Jepsen, Yo La Tengo, Wilco… just to name a few (see above).

“The Bellwether will be the next step for an artist in our LA ecosystem,” Swier said in an earlier interview with Variety. “Artists can grow from the Moroccan Lounge to the Teragram Ballroom and now to The Bellwether. This is similar to what we built in New York City with the Mercury Lounge and Bowery Ballroom and to APE’s venue infrastructure in the San Francisco Bay Area with The Independent, Fox Theater, and Greek Theatre. In partnering with Gregg and Another Planet Entertainment, the largest independent promoter in the country, our visions of long-term artist development are aligned.”

The building, designed by Brian Swier, features a main music room with a capacity of some 1,600 people, a wrap-around balcony, and a custom wooden dance floor as well as a private event space, restaurant, bar, VIP areas, and an open-air lounge with views of downtown L.A. This sounds promising.
