That Was The Week That Was: January 11th, 2016

school bully

Trump: Forget policy, Trump is just too nasty, people won’t trust him with the key to jeep. He is like the school bully, but is he like Michael Palin’s school bully?

Death: When they put this week down in the history it will have one name emblazoned upon it: David Bowie. He died on the Sunday, January 10th, 2016, and one week later his final album, Blackstar, was at the top of the US (and UK of course) charts. Alyson Camus and I have written about him constantly all week. As has everybody else,

Lori Maddox: I wrote about Lori in 2012 (here) in a story ignored till recently: the fact is Bowie is a rapist by any legal standard, all caveats notwithstanding. However, to remove that truth from its historic perspective is asinine. To turn Bowie into Bill Cosby is cultural reductivism. And to reduce his sexual activism to fashion is to miss the point for millions of homosexual and lesbian teens. Mick Jagger sang “Yes, I know you’re only fourteen years old, no I don’t want to see your ID”… go lynch him if you’re in the mood.

The World: The release of five US  captives from Iran (a sixth has disappeared) was met by Universal hosannahs, except by the Republicans who claimed the US had given away too much in return. In fact, this is one of the great achievements of the Obama Presidency, and, as someone on Facebook mentioned, Reagan gave Iran land to air missiles to get back the hostages in 1981.

The Democratic And Republican Presidential Debates: Sanders won one, Trump the other, neither moved the needle enough.

Recorded: Two great ones I’ve written about a number of times already, Panic! and Paak, but now add Bloodiest as the sleeper of the week, which took awhile but has hit hard by now.

Live: Here comes Bruuuuuuceeeeeeeeeeee
