Summer’s Gone: In The Rear Window In 2023

So how hot was it? The US became one big Phoenix, sizzling in 100 degrees weather plus for months on end this year, except not everywhere New York City was a steady 80 degrees plus for most of the summer while it slowly disappears till now, three weeks after the end it is already getting cooler.

What appeared to be perfect was an odd year music wise. The charts imploded into a handful of hits and some mega concerts. Otherwise, we didn’t even get a song of the summer. In 2022 you might have given it to Harry Styles for the best song of the 2020s (so far) but 2023? Billboard claims the title for Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” but what sort of summer song is that? It has been hovering on the charts top echelons since March, 2023.

So no real song.

So the what of summer? Concerts. The dreaded MetLife… I went once, to the Taylor Swift “ERAS” stop, and I just can’t stand big arenas that are a bitch to get there and a bitch to get out. I spent $400 for a nosebleed seat and that was a GREAT DEAL. I caught Bruce and SZA at Barclay Center but passed on Beyonce, Bruce’s return, and everything else in between. It isn’t fun. Arena concerts, maybe in a better stadium. This is from sportsnaught.com (here), where MetLife was considered the second worst in the country:

“MetLife Stadium is the largest stadium in the NFL. So at least it has that going for it. Feral cats might be the only living things that love MetLife Stadium. Home to 300-plus cats, the New York Giants and New York Jets also share this building. It’s a journey just for fans to make it out to New Jersey. Once they get inside, after forking out hundreds of dollars, they see a dull stadium without substance. Sadly, since it was built in 2007 and cost nearly $2 billion, MetLife Stadium is sticking around for decades, no doubt towards the bottom of this NFL stadium rankings.”

So not live shows… except. There were two events that made the summer of 2023:

1 – Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour”

2 – Barbie and Oppenheimer

The Barbenheimer double up was magical, two great movies that oddly overlapped, Barbie about the patriarchy and Oppenheimer the effect of the patriarchy on the planet. So that was the song of the summer that wasn’t one.

Now, this Saturday “Stop Making Sense” at IMAX and back to the Era tour now at cinema houses in mid-October…
