Sting Will Sing At The Re-Opening Of The Bataclan In Paris

sting

Sting will sing for the re-openign of the Bataclan. Sting: ‘I have even reformed ‘The Police’!’

Poor Parisians, as if they hadn’t suffered enough already! They had to go through a series of terrorist attacks, the slaughter at the Bataclan being the most horrific of all, but now this: Sting has decided to play for the grand reopening of the theater, the first show since the terrorist attack which killed 90 people and injured many during an Eagles of Death Metal show.

Sting will perform an exclusive concert on November 12, a year after the bloodshed, and you can read the following on his website:

‘In re-opening the Bataclan, we have two important tasks to reconcile. First, to remember and honour those who lost their lives in the attack a year ago, and second to celebrate the life and the music that this historic theatre represents. In doing so we hope to respect the memory as well as the life affirming spirit of those who fell. We shall not forget them.’

I know that Sting wants to wear his nice shining armor, as he will donate the proceeds from his show to Life for Paris and 13 Novembre: Fraternité Verité, two organizations supporting the victims of the attacks and their families,… but allow me to be a bit cynical, first he has a new album to promote, ‘57th & 9th’, which conveniently drops a day before the concert, then this sounds a bit like a sort of reclamation of the disaster: he looks like a savior who is giving life to this place again… as a result, all the comments I have read about the event are positive towards Sting!

But, and there is a big but, this is not all good! After reading many comments on several French pages, I can tell that not everyone is happy to see the venue going back to life, many people even thinks it is indecent: ‘It’s impossible to enter the pace without thinking about what happened’… ‘This would give me chills, I wouldn’t be able to go see a concert there, that would be the equivalent of going to a concert at Auschwitz’…’The feeling is too strange and heavy’..’it’s crazy how society looses its dignity, I like to have fun but I think the victims would not approve, this place should be a memorial’…’Too many people died there in an atrocious way’… ‘They put a memorial at the location of the 9/11 attack, this should be a memorial’… ‘it would be like dancing in a cemetery, on people’s tombs’…’I love Sting, but out of respect for the victims, I would never be able to go’… ’it’s a shame to celebrate the re-opening on the date when hundreds of people died, it’s disrespectful’…

I could go on forever, I read many of these comments, people are stupid and this will never change. However, I guess there will be enough ‘brave’ people to fill the Bataclan, which is not a very large venue to begin with. Of course, Charlie Hebdo didn’t pass on the occasion to produce this carton for the occasion, which should cancel all the previous comments.

Tickets for the November 12th gig will go on sale this coming Tuesday and may be purchased online.
