Steven Van Zandt Spent A Few Days Criticizing The Hamilton’s Cast On Twitter

Steven Van Zandt

This is definitively a reaction I didn’t expect. Steven Van Zandt, Bruce Springsteen’s long time guitarist, took on Twitter a few days ago to criticize the cast of Hamilton who recently lectured vice-president Mike Pence. Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr, addressed Pence who was attending the show, and told him he felt concerned about this new administration and its treatment of the country’s diversity. The discourse was polite and despite Trump’s over-reaction on Twitter, Pence told he didn’t feel offended by what was said.

However, Steven Van Zandt was offended, and he wrote a series of tweets criticizing Hamilton’s cast, using the terms ‘inappropriate’, ‘bullying’, ‘rude’ several time and insisting on the fact that a guest invited at a Broadway play should be safe.

It’s surprising for a guy who has been politically outspoken for decades,…. doesn’t Bruce Springsteen speak his mind on stage all the time? Doesn’t he give his opinion regarding all kinds of political issues? But for Van Zandt, this is different, as the Hamilton cast singled out a member of the audience:

‘It was the most respectful, benign form of bullying ever. But bullying nonetheless. And by the way, human rights must be won, not asked for,’ he wrote after a long series of arguments with people on Twitter.

I don’t know why Steven Van Zandt spent so much time defending a guy he doesn’t share any idea with to say the least. I almost get his argument, in the sense that art should speak by itself, meaning that, if you have to explain it at length and lecture about it, art has missed its main objective and goal,… but this is not a common situation, the elected people are not the subtle type, and may be an extra lecture was necessary, although I don’t think Pence’s ideas have changed a bit because of it.

This sets a terrible precedent, says Van Zandt. But didn’t this election set a terrible precedent when the elect president has effectively bullied 90% of the American population? Didn’t Trump single out a disable reporter and made fun of him in public? After this episode, there should have been no restrain from the opposition, this was the vilest episode in US politics ever.

As for Mike Pence, he is a fervent opponent of abortion rights, a pro ‘gay-therapy’, an opponent of LGBT and refugees rights, a climate science denialist, and thus the real bully in the story, probably as bad or even worst than Trump. Does Van Zandt realize he is pleasing the opposition? They are delighted by something like this. Van Zandt wants to play fair game with people who have no idea of what real fairness is, he is an idealist who wants to apply an impeccable ethic to people who have none, or at least a very twisted one. You can’t be subtle with people who repeatedly step on basic human rights.

Well, ok, my take is that Steven’s got that head scarf of his wrapped just a little too tightly. He should have kept his damn mouth shut. Or maybe he’s bucking for ambassador to New Jersey.
