Grammy Award winner and two-time Emmy nominee Steve Tyrell’s classic album, Back to Bacharach, will be reissued as a remastered and expanded 21-track edition October 12 byNew Design Records and East/West Records. The new edition will be available for pre-order September 21 with immediate download and streaming of previously unreleased track “That’s What Friends Are For,” which now opens the album as originally intended by Tyrell. Pre-order the album HERE.
The release celebrates both the album’s tenth anniversary and the 90th birthday of music legend Burt Bacharach—with whom Tyrell worked closely and credits as one of his most profound influences—and features seven never-before-released bonus tracks. See below for full expanded track list and guest vocalists, which include Bacharach himself, Dionne WarwickRod StewartJames TaylorHerb AlpertPatti Austin and Martina McBride.
“In many ways, this is my most personal album. I have been asked many times, ‘Where did you go to college?’ and I always answer, ‘I’m a graduate of Bacharach University!’” says Tyrell. “Since I began recording, this is the album I’ve always wanted to make. Burt and I started to record it in 2002 and returned to it in 2008, building on our original sessions and shaping them into a proper album. Now, in 2018, with the opportunity to celebrate its 10th anniversary, we’ve returned again to a place I’ve never really left. We’ve updated the original audio to the latest technology and added more songs that I’ve always loved, and regretted leaving out.”
The release follows last winter’s A Song For You, which hit the #1 spots on both SoundScan and Billboard’s Traditional Jazz Album Charts. Tyrell will perform songs from both releases on his upcoming tour dates—see below for details.
Tyrell has spent nearly five decades as a songwriter, producer, music supervisor and vocalist. As producer he has helped create hits for legends such as Rod Stewart, Linda Ronstadt and Diana Ross, to name just a few. Eleven of Tyrell’s own albums have reached top-five status on Billboard’s Jazz charts, with his most recent A Song For You hitting #1. He continually works to reinvent the American Standards Songbook and connect classic tunes to a modern audience, performing extensively with his band and with orchestras across the country and around the world—from the Hollywood Bowl to Carnegie Hall to Buckingham Palace. For over a decade Tyrell has held his acclaimed annual holiday residency at the famed Café Carlyle in New York City, in addition to a yearly residency at Monteverdi in Tuscany, Italy.
Every Monday through Friday, Tyrell hosts “The Steve Tyrell Show” on KJAZZ in Los Angeles.
