Save The Smell Fest At Mojo Studios, Saturday August 6th 2016

I survived Save the Smell Fest and its long marathon of bands! 39 bands had been scheduled on three stages in one long afternoon-evening at a secret location in east Los Angeles, and I ended up seeing about 24 of them, more or less, as the outdoor stage was on a small courtyard and became very crowded at the end of the day.

The secret location, Mojo Studios, was revealed on their Facebook page only one hour before it started, and the whole fest had a very DIY vibe, just the way they wanted, a movement to keep the spirit of one of the most prominent cultural landmarks of the DIY scene alive for the future generations to come, and save the small club downtown LA, as the building that houses the venue is set for demolition soon.

‘There’s nothing like the Smell’, said No Age’s drummer Dean Allen Spunt at the end of the day, and by then, kids had already moshed their heart out and sung-along with a long series of punk bands. It was wild and decadent, fun and sloppy, punk and poetic, and with a smart no-alcohol policy and no real security in view, the whole thing had very few glitches and a real feel of freedom. Photographers had unrestrained access around stages, a very good thing to escape the enthusiastic crowds. They have just announced on their Facebook page that they have raised over $10,000, a real success, which could mean a Save the Smell fest part two, as the end goal is to raise $1.4 million to buy a new building!

There were so many highlights of the day, from the fun aggression of punk bands like Heller Keller and Beach Bums, to the provocation of Sloppy Jane, or the life celebration of Batwings Catwings and The Gooch Palms, the fest had also a very poppy side with Janelane or Wyatt Blair, but the common spirit was this unleashed youthful freedom running through the night and its apotheosis during Kim and the Created’s set, reinventing a furious glam rock. No Age, as one of The Smell’s most famous graduates, was obviously one of the bands headlining the night, but may be the fact that the very young Cherry Glazerr were closing the night was the most significant aspect of Save the Smell fest. It was a celebration of LA underground music, glorifying youth and a DIY ethic, very much alive.

Now what in Heaven’s name did Jack London ever do to deserve that? Today there are tears in the eyes of wolf-dogs throughout the nation.
