Tailing up the Christmas season, Finland’s favorite son and soul brother Sam Huber is joined by the True Groove Allstars on a cover of Mack Rice’s (the great man behind “Mustang Sally”) “Santa Clause Wants Some Lovin'”.
It’s a sexy little performance, soulful but also in a tradition that dates back at least to Elvis Presley’s “It’s Christmas Time Pretty Baby” – Presley is more lascivious but Sam more inclusive. Sam is a sex symbol for 2023 and the band itself are on the money with Tomas Doncker, an expert rhythm guitarist, performing a melodic beauty of a break and the Specials horns a stream of interjections and underlines.
The family atmosphere, kids in bed, midnight strikes on Christmas Day and lovin’ is in the air, as the band rocks out in shades and Sam, with his wavy blonde hair and gorgeous blonde suit, commands the stage with an easygoingness that manages to pay tribute to Mack and also pay tribute to his peers in his second band, The Falcons, Eddie Floyd, Wilson Pickett and Joe Stubbs. Those are the sort of names that are even more famous than Mack… This is soul 101 names dating as far back as 1957.
Thanks to Sam and the All Stars for bringing it all back home with some sweet soul music for Christmas.
