Ryan Adams Has Just Announced A Concert At Carnegie Hall

Very quietly, Ryan Adams has announced a concert at Carnegie Hall on his Instagram page this morning. This is a big comeback to the stage in one of the most prestigious venues of New York City, and this is obviously a big deal. So far, I haven’t seen any announcement on mainstream media, there is not a word of the event on the websites of the usual suspects, from Rolling Stone to Pitchfork, Spin… but I didn’t really expect to see Adams’s name on these publications again. As everyone knows, Ryan Adams’s career was canceled a few years ago, just after the publication of the 2019 New York Times article, which accused him of sexual misconduct with several women.

For many fans, it was obviously a very different story on social media. Adams hasn’t played any concert since 2019, so imagine the surprise! : “I can’t stop jumping up for joy!”… “this is really happening”… “I’m over the moon!”…”So happy for all the fans that can get along to it”… “Almost in a state of shock. Wow, what a way to come back!”

Indeed, what a way to come back! I honestly thought he would first try a timid resurgence in small venues, but Carnegie Hall is a high-profile venue, and this sounds like a big way to tell the world, ‘I’m still here and I still matter.’ Adams has already played at Carnegie Hall (we were there in 2011, review here) and this led to a double live album, “Live at Carnegie Hall,” released in 2015.

The artist presale happened today, and it sold out extremely fast – around 20 min according to many anxious fans who were wondering about the presale code till the last minute. There is another local presale tomorrow then a public sale on Friday, but I bet the show will sell out. Some people are even speculating he will add a night or two at the same place. Who knows? If it is a success, anything goes, other dates could be announced soon or, better, it could be the launch of a US tour: after all Adams has two new albums (“Wednesday” and “Big Colors”) to promote and he has been rehearsing for months with numerous Instagram live streams.

‘Does cancel culture really exist?’ a few people have started to ask on social media? Of course, it does! The silence of the press is the best evidence of it. His public may decide differently, and this is a good thing: you cannot impose one way of thinking on an entire country, or the whole world!

The concert will take place at New York’s Carnegie Hall on May 14th, in the Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, and it is presented by Metropolitan Entertainment which also presents concerts by Diana Krall, Gipsy Kings, America, Janis Ian… It’s not Live Nation or Goldenvoice, but does it even matter? This is even a good thing since the tickets may be much cheaper. I wonder who is going to cover the show? RockNYC (Iman got a ticket) will very probably be one of the very few.
