Ringo Starr’s 77th Birthday At Capitol Records, Friday July 7th 2017

Jenny Lewis, David Lynch, Joe Walsh and Ringo Star

It has become a Hollywood tradition, Ringo Starr is celebrating his birthday every year in front of the Capitol Records building, and wishes peace and love to the entire world by the same occasion. This year again, I attended the mini ceremony with lots of fans of all ages, waiting patiently for Ringo and friends to show up around 12 pm. This year was a magic number because the ex-Beatles was turned 77 on 7/7/2017, and it’s really hard to believe it when you are looking at him. He looks so good and alert that you would give him at least 10 years less than he really is.

To make the show last a bit longer, Ringo always invites artists to perform before the euphoric minute of collective peace signs, and this year was more international than before, as Ringo is hoping for this peace celebration to become a world-wide thing: ‘My dream — my fantasy — is that one day in the future everyone on the planet will stop at noon and say, ‘Peace and love.’

Haitian musician Emmanuel Jal and rapper Paul Beaubrun, a South Sudanese war refugee, played a reggae adaptation of Ringo’s 1971 hit ‘It Don’t Come Easy’ with Beaubrun taking some liberty with the lyrics and adding rap verses about the horror of war. Then, to my surprise, Jenny Lewis followed with a rendition of Ringo’s ‘Walk With You’ with the help of Van Dyke Parks on accordion, superstar Jim Keltner on drums, record producer Don Was on bass and Mike Bearden on keyboard. They also went very retro with Jenny’s take on 1955 hit ‘Only You’ also covered by Ringo… but as the famous Beatles was already showing up behind the stage, fans became hysterical!!

The woman in front of me said she had been there since 4 am, which is a bit insane because I just showed up 2 hours ahead of the ceremony. As usual, a lot of Ringo’s close friends were there, such as David Lynch, Ringo’s drummer Gregg Bissonette, Edgar Winter and of course brother-in-law Joe Walsh.

At the same time, Ringo announced the upcoming release of a new album, ‘Give More Love’, which will be released by Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) on September 15th. The title track is already available to those who have pre-ordered the album, and according to the LA Times, the album includes many guests such as Paul McCartney, Joe Walsh, Edgar Winter, Peter Frampton, Benmont Tench, Nathan East, Dave Stewart, Don Was, Gary Nicholson, Timothy B. Schmit and Steve Lukather. Surprisingly, Ringo originally planned the album as a country album, ‘Dave Stewart and I were going to go down to Nashville and do a country album there,’ he said to the LA Times, but he ended up making the album at home with friends.

This year, I even caught Ringo exiting the building in his limo after the ceremony, and he rolled down his window to make the peace sign to us.

This is just an awesome way to celebrate a birthday,… every year peace and love bracelets and yummy cookies are thrown to the crowd, every year there is the feeling that peace can become a reality in this crazy and violent world. We all know it’s just wishful thinking, but when it’s a Beatles’ wish, everything seems possible.
