The use of cell phones during live music events has been the subject of endless controversy, you have artists that are totally against it and some of them have even thrown a tantrum at the vision of a fan using a phone. The Eagles, Alicia Keys, Jack White, Chrissie Hyde are included in the list of artists who have banned cell phones during their concerts! In the case of Alicia Keys, it happened just a few days ago and concert goers were asked to lock up their phones in special pouches designed by Yondr, a tech company which produces phone-free zones… yes this type of things exist now. Locking up people’s phones during a concert is the most pretentious and ridiculous thing to do in 2016… who are we? Children who can’t handle their toys? May be we are but I should not be punished because some idiot has a Facebook addiction. I use my phone during concert, wisely and intend to continue to do so.
This is why the Eagles, Jack White, Alicia Keys and a few others are showing their age, they are old, and this is why Radiohead is cool. Not only the famous UK band didn’t ban cell phones at their recent concerts, but they are even encouraging people to use them.
As Pitchfork points out, the band played at Iceland’s Secret Solstice festival last weekend and WiFi codes were made available to the audience just before the show through Twitter and Radiohead’s W.A.S.T.E. Central site. Then fans were asked to share their movies on Periscope, isn’t it beautiful? Welcome to our century, of course, Radiohead has understood this a long time ago.
