Press Releases For May: Here Are The Artists

press releases for May
Miranda and the Beat

Katie Boeck, Jane., Dexys (fka Dexys Midnight Runners), Stolen Gin, Mura Masa, Miranda and the Beat, and Albert Hammond Jr are the artists among these press releases for May.

Katie Boeck – “Calico (Lonely Love)”: Dreamy vocals floating over strong acoustic guitar chords and a jazz-folk flair that sounds like a ‘70s classic. This is a single by singer/songwriter and actor (Wendla in The Broadway revival of “Spring Awakening”) Katie Boeck. “This became my personal anthem of freedom and empowerment when I finally came to the realization that my worth didn’t come from being chosen or seen, but from choosing and seeing myself,” says Katie. The single was preceded by “Over Again,” which has been described as “smoldering” (- Atwood Magazine), “sultry” ( -The Honey Pop), and “.. a siren’s song of enchantment.” (- Music Mecca). And most recently, “Bittersweet” which Folk N Rock calls “…a stunning showcase of Katie’s incredible vocals and her ability to imbue her music with a deep sense of emotion and authenticity.” All three singles are on her new album “Calico,” released last month. Co-written and co-produced with Dustin Ransom, the album captures the arc of maturing relationships—from naïveté and illusion to self-love and sovereignty. It’s an album about modern love and the longing that still tugs beneath the promise of our hyper-connected culture. These are songs about life taking unexpected courses and stories of love just out of reach.

Jane. – “Made For You”: A Mazzy Star production for an ethereal and hypnotic song with subtle beats, an ascending melody, and Jane.’s tranquil, breathy, and then emotive vocals. LA-based alternative singer-songwriter Jane. has shared a soul-baring and highly-anticipated EP, “Celeste,” via Good News Only. Alongside the dreamy EP comes this tender ode to love, “Made For You,” with a sweet accompanying lyric video. The loose idea of the track has been floating around in the musician’s head for over eight years. Jane. explains, “I’ve had chords and the melody and the phrase ‘It’s true, I think I’m made for you’ for a really long time. After becoming engaged, and now married, it felt appropriate for this song to see life.” The track’s subject matter came naturally, born out of a loving long-term relationship. He continues, “I can’t help but write love songs as I’ve been in love with the same woman for 13 years, and similar to the previous single, ‘Beach Inside,’ love is such an important part of our time here, and I had to include it on the project.” The title of the five-track EP, “Celeste,” is taken from the Latin word meaning “heavenly,” and holds tracks that led the singer down a path towards further discovering himself, his pain, and his route to healing and subsequently, his spirituality. Jane. explains, “It’s a representation of my journey mentally traveling to the heavens to deal with this pain. To ask questions. To make confessions. To heal. To try and define how my spirituality plays into this pain.” By sharing his own experiences of pain, Jane. hopes to help others better understand their struggles. Jane. continues, “There are beautiful moments and songs on the project, but overall, it’s something of a cry. It may even be a call for help. I have this recurring message of truth and honesty, and as I keep growing as a person, and growing as an artist, I keep feeling the need to share. To share what I find out as I grow. At this point, I feel a responsibility to it.”

Dexys (fka Dexys Midnight Runners) –“ I’m Going To Get Free”: A vibrant, all-horn and claps track filled with upbeat energy and real optimism destined to boost any mood. Storied English pop-rock band Dexys (formerly Dexys Midnight Runners) — who are best known for their Brit Award-winning commercial smash-hit “Come On Eileen,” which reached number one in 8 countries and became the best-selling single in the UK and US in 1982 — are finally returning in full swing with the announcement of their first new record of original material in over a decade, “The Feminine Divine,” due July 28 via 100% Records. To introduce the record, they have shared its first single, “I’m Going To Get Free,” alongside an accompanying music video. Led by musician Kevin Rowland, Dexys is regarded as one of the more prominent British bands to arise in the 80s, with over 1B streams worldwide, 4.5M monthly listeners on Spotify, 49k subscribers on YouTube, and 71K followers on Facebook. Their debut album “Searching For The Young Soul Rebels” is widely considered one of the best albums of all time, and their subsequent album “Too-Rye-Ay” is multi-platinum in the UK and Australia and charted in the top 20 in the UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands. Their music has appeared on the soundtracks of countless TV shows and films including “High Fidelity” (TV), “The Perks Of Being A Wallflower,” “Jane The Virgin,” “What We Do In The Shadows,” “Preachers,” “Superstore,” “Firefly Lane,” and “Get Him To The Greek.” “The Feminine Divine” is Dexys’ fifth album of original material produced once again by Pete Schwier, along with acclaimed session musician and producer Toby Chapman. After taking some time out to refocus his energy, Kevin Rowland came back to music with a fresh perspective and new-found positivity. A personal, if not strictly autobiographical, record portraying a man whose views have evolved over time. Not just on women, but the whole concept of masculinity he had been raised with : an education and an un-learning that is traced across the arc of “The Feminine Divine” with dizzying effect.

Stolen Gin – “Drunk Ambition”: Vulnerable but soaring vocals over rich and funky instrumentation completed with saxophone solos. NYC’s Stolen Gin, a dance-funk quintet formed in 2019, is known for their high-energy live act and avid improvisation–they never play songs the same way twice. The band first came together playing college parties on NYC rooftops, and their goal then was the same as it is now: to make every gig feel like a party, and to keep people dancing. They tour consistently, selling out their last eight consecutive NYC headliners in the span of the last 18 months at venues such as Baby’s All Right, Mercury Lounge, and more. The band recently played in both D.C. and Boston for the first time, with sellouts in both of those cities. They’ve also just finished a tour with the legendary jam band TAUK, and now Stolen Gin is heading back into the studio to make more new music. Stolen Gin has fortunately gone viral on TikTok a number of times–thanks to covers of songs by Sublime and Cee Lo Green–accumulating 150,000+ followers on the app and 30,000+ followers on Instagram. What sets Stolen Gin apart, though, is that they’re five highly trained, lifelong musicians, with degrees spanning performance, composition, and music technology. However, despite their high level of technical training, they have never relinquished the goal to make easily enjoyable, danceable music that can appeal to music-nerds just as much as it can appeal to any casual listener that wants to get into the party mood. It’s quite rare for a band with music as technically advanced as Stolen Gin’s to accumulate a core fanbase of college kids and young adults, but it’s even more rare for a band that makes pop-oriented music to have the level of musicianship and care for the craft that they have.

Mura Masa – “Whenever I Want”: An electronic rap-influenced and curious song that glitches and jumps with a restless repetitive video game energy. The Grammy-winning artist, producer, and songwriter has shared this new single, via his own Pond Recordings alongside a video directed by The Reids. Drawing inspiration from junglism, jersey club and break core, “Whenever I Want” takes the base elements of these subgenres and transforms them into something that sounds decidedly Mura Masa. The track marks the continuation of a club-oriented era that will see Mura Masa explore the full spectrum of electronic music with releases on his own new label, Pond Recordings. The new track follows Mura Masa’s production on the chart-topping, global hit, “Boy’s a liar Pt. 2” with PinkPantheress and Ice Spice and his critically acclaimed third studio album, demon time, released to critical acclaim in 2022, which saw the in-demand producer channel hedonistic themes and nuanced subcultures into thrillingly futuristic pop. Written shortly after his European tour in support of his guitar-driven second album, R.Y.C, the record connected the dots between his genre-shaping Soundcloud origin story and the new wave of electronic music as it exploded on platforms like TikTok. Continuing Mura Masa’s ever-growing list of blockbuster collaborators, demon time featured contributions from Shygirl, Lil Uzi Vert, PinkPantheress, slowthai, Erika de Casier, Pa Salieu, and more. The 25-year-old songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Alex Crossan—has always resisted simple categorization. He is a Platinum-selling, Grammy-winning (and four-times nominated) artist, who has surpassed two billion lifetime streams and toured the world over, headlining shows worldwide and playing sets at Coachella, Primavera Sound, and more. His self-titled 2017 debut catapulted him into the international spotlight, and his 2020 album, R.Y.C., attracted widespread critical acclaim with collaborations from Tirzah, Clairo, slowthai, Georgia, and more. He also co-founded the 3T training program in 2020, designed to provide training and opportunity for underrepresented groups in the touring and live sector.

Miranda and the Beat – “Sweat”: A big and ferocious sonic statement with a Karen O inspiration in the vocals and a delivery filled with swagger and determination. On May 26, Miranda and the Beat will release their self-titled debut album on Ernest Jenning Record Co. / King Khan’s Khannibalism label. The album follows the band’s single “Such A Fool” released via Third Man Records. About the band King Khan “Emperor of RnB” says: “I never thought I would see someone be able to play guitar with the ferocity of Link Wray, and sing like Lydia Lunch had a nuclear meltdown and morphed into Etta James and Yma Sumac. Miranda and the Beat ARE the quintessential heirs to our rock n’ roll throne… May the circle remain unbroken. Consider the torch has not only been passed but its fiery tale is ready to set the whole world on fire all over again.” In a small town in California, Miranda Zipse and Kim Sollecito started Miranda and The Beat, a bad girl duo with a penchant for penning hits. Miranda, a high school dropout at 15, had been working for her mom’s estate sale business going through dead people’s belongings and making up melodies in her head as she went about it. After playing locally the two decided to visit New York City and tried their chops playing gigs around town. When their friends and local legends, The Mystery Lights, went on tour, the two shacked up in their apartment and simply decided never to leave. Giving up all their possessions and sacrificing a tawdry normal existence to lead a true path of illuminated rock n’ roll. Kim and Miranda shared a bed, looking for work and honing their craft. They met their Farfisa player Dylan Fernandez when he delivered weed to a guy Miranda was dating at the time in their apartment. A few years later they added Dylan’s little brother, Alvin Jackson on bass after the departure of Kate Gutwald. The band played around New York City mixing their witchcraft with true gut-wrenching RnB and writing what would become their debut album. In 2022 they finally left the big city and toured seven fun-filled weeks in every nook, cranny, and butthole of the U.S. and Canada with The King Khan and BBQ Show. After losing a tooth and a few broken bones later, the band is now ready for the world to hear their self-titled debut album. It is hot and spicy with tracks like “Sweat,” glorifying hangover sweats “all up in your crack.” Mixed and with production by Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, their debut album is a hallucinogenic ode to the cannon of soul, garage punk, pure RnB, and utter mayhem.

Albert Hammond Jr – “100-99” featuring GoldLink”: A single from acclaimed vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist Albert Hammond Jr’s new solo album” Melodies On Hiatus,” slated for release on June 23 via Red Bull Records. The melody breaks into a hip hop part, contrasting with Hammond’s familiar vocals. “100-99” featuring GoldLink, debuts alongside a video directed by Angela Ricciardi and Silken Weinberg. “I grew up listening to 90s hip-hop, and I would always gravitate towards the melodic hooks in the songs I heard on the radio, specifically anything Dr. Dre was producing or rapping on,” Hammond Jr says about the new track. “Years later, I noticed myself pulling from the style of those melodic lines in my guitar work, even though it wasn’t obvious to anyone else as I was so directly associated with being in a rock band. ‘100-99’ was something I’ve wanted to do for some time—work with a rapper over a beat and guitar part I wrote—and it’s really exciting that I was able to do it with GoldLink.” “When we first met with Albert, it was clear we were all on the same page: we wanted to have fun and we wanted to experiment with simple concepts that tell a deeper story,” Ricciardi and Weinberg say about the video. “The album is 19 tracks, it’s sprawling but interconnected in a special kind of way, and we wanted to maintain that visually as well. The five videos we made for Melodies on Hiatus take place in a series of rooms all within one larger space, with different scenes that string together one very long night. Throughout the entire process, Albert was so open and kind, he trusted us, and it cultivated a really pure, almost psychedelic environment.” Featuring contributions from GoldLink, Steve Stevens, Matt Helders and Rainsford, the album was co-written remotely with Simon Wilcox, mixed by Tony Hoffer (Beck, Air, M83, Metric, Chromeo) and mastered by Dave Cooley (Paramore, Spoon, Tame Impala, Jimmy Eat World,).
