Press Releases for May: Here Are The Artists

press releases for May
BabyJake is among these press releases for May

The Shindellas, Secret Machines, BabyJake, Julian Loida, Jungle, Alfa Mist, and Homeschool are the artists among these press releases for May.

The Shindellas – “Last Night Was Good For My Soul”: A foot-tapping multi-harmonies R&B track with a touch of funk, and retro hip hop, producing an uplifting style like a girl group inspired by Chic. This is the new single by emerging Nashville trio The Shindellas, written and produced by Louis York—the Grammy Award-winning duo of Claude Kelly and Chuck Harmony (Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Jazmine Sullivan). Already receiving widespread notice, Nashville Scene asserts, “The trio is a true vocal powerhouse, and they eschew the idea of a lead singer in favor of trading verses and singing in glorious three-part harmony,” The Shindellas—Tamara Chauniece, Stacy Johnson, and Kasi Jones—tap into R&B and soul to bring forth a sound they call “New American Soul.” The group made history as the first R&B band to perform at the CMT Awards in 2021. In addition to widespread critical acclaim, the trio has performed at the 2022 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting, Disney’s Dreamers Academy, ESSENCE Festival of Culture, TED x Nashville Women, and the 2021 CMA Country Christmas.

Secret Machines – “I Think It’s Light Outside”: A fuzzy and dense track, slowly sprawling with reverb and steady drumming while a real optimism builds a bridge between pop song and rock experimentation. This is a song from Secret Machines’ long-awaited new LP, “The Moth, The Lizard, and the Secret Machines,” a somewhat “lost” record and their first new release since 2020’s “Awake in the Brain Chamber.” Brandon Curtis said of their new record: “Finally getting to share these songs after so many incarnations, after all this time, after so much has happened, has been a wonderful experience. Listening through has been like connecting to a memory that had begun to recede. I think the improvisational nature of the process and the rawness of the performances allow all this feeling and emotion to bubble up through the wash of sounds and pulses. We are extremely proud of the work that went into making this album and are excited to present this track as another preview of the album.” On the track, Josh Garza wrote: “At times, it feels like it’s two or three different ideas playing at the same time to form one song. The concept of improvisation, experimentation, and song being fused together with Brandon’s lyrics and vocals keep the song from flying off the edge.”

BabyJake – “We Got To Get Together To Be Free”: A catchy and positive ‘70s-inspired rock song with a contemporary theme (watch the music video) and a very cinematic vibe. This single acts as a commentary and a call to action in response to the Tennessee Senate’s introduction of bills that attack drag performers and members of the LGBTQ community. BabyJake wrote of the track and its inspiration: “Last month, Tennessee Senate Bill 0003 + House Bill 0009 were introduced as a direct attack on drag performers + other entertainers impacting many members + artists of the LGBTQ community and beyond. This threatens not only jobs but freedom of expression and art. I’m fed up with the world, fed up with how we’ve been treating each other, fed up with all of the divides between humans. This song + video was my positive approach to the situation at hand. It’s my call to action, my tune of inspiration, my version of yelling out from the rafters ‘Let people express themselves however they choose!’ Whatever you look like, whatever you’ve been through, whatever you believe … I respect you. There’s a place for you. The only way we are going to get better is if we stick together.”

Julian Loida – “Giverny,”: A pastoral piano composition with eerie vocals slowly expanding into a more complex soundscape filled with moving lights and changing moods. This is the title track from Julian Loida’s forthcoming full-length album, out May 19th via Gratitude Sound. The Boston-based percussionist, composer, educator, and producer explained: “Giverny is the small town outside of Paris where Claude Monet lived, worked, and changed the world through his paintings. The light in this town is soft and warm, where ‘golden hour’ is all day, serene. I visited twice in the spring and fall and when this music came to me, the sound and the feeling of this piece reminded me of Giverny, the light, the feeling of walking through this artist’s gardens and grounds.” The music video features dancer Sam McReynolds, who co-directed the visual with Loida. “Ever since I first conceived of this album, I’ve known I wanted to create dance films for each track,” explains Loida. “Dancers and filmmakers have a way of bringing a new life to music as dancers use their bodies and filmmakers use light, lenses, and their eyes. Though we filmed the video in Los Angeles during the peak summer, we were able to bring out the greens and golds from my memories of visiting Giverny. It always amazes me how a small group of dedicated artists can come together and make something personal as I told them, ‘Memories are far better shared.’” Loida’s range of sound and genre exploration is largely a product of his synesthesia – music is a literal full-body experience for him, with sounds often invoking involuntary sensations of color, texture, or even taste. For Julian Loida, music is a visual art.

Jungle – “Candle Flame” featuring rapper Erick the Architect: A rap song with an eccentric and feel-good production, a euphoric vibe reinforced by the creative choreography of the music video. “Volcano,” the highly anticipated new album from British songwriting and production duo Jungle, is set for release on August 11 via Caiola Records / AWAL. “As Jungle, we are incredibly proud of our latest release, ‘Candle Flame,’” recall band members/producers J&T. “We wanted to create a song that was both personal and relatable, exploring the highs and lows of love and relationships in a way that was both poetic and authentic. Working with Erick The Architect was an absolute pleasure and his unique perspective and talent added an extra layer of depth and richness to the track. ‘Candle Flame’ represents everything we stand for as a band—creativity, passion, and a commitment to making music that touches the hearts and minds of our fans. We can’t wait for everyone to hear it, and we hope that it brings joy and inspiration to all who listen.” The free-spirited energy that runs right through Volcano reflects how organically it came together. This time around the duo wanted to include a wider variety of voices within the album, leading to collaborations with Erick The Architect, Bas, Roots Manuva, Channel Tres, JNR Williams, and more.

Alfa Mist – “Apho”: A melancholic jazzy track featuring South African folk singer Bongeziwe Mabandla and wandering between genres and moods. Intricately layered with the deep, grounding sounds of the cello and Mabandla’s crystalline falsetto that skips over drummer Jas Kayser’s frenetic beat, “Apho” offers a swirl of emotions, taking you on a melancholic yet thrilling journey. The video by Australian filmmaker SPOD is based on the album artwork painted by the band’s bass player, Kaya Thomas-Dyke. In constant motion – shapes, figures, and rich tones of blue and purple morph into each other throughout to captivating effect. “I’ve been focused on who I am in my music, but now I’m exploring where I am,” Alfa Mist says of the new single. “I’m asking: how did I get here?” This is the journeying question that underpins Alfa’s fifth album, “Variables.” Traversing luscious, big band swing, head-nodding boom-bap rhythms, and yearning vocal melodies, the record is expansive, soulful, and moving, in both body and spirit. On “Variables,” his second release for ANTI-, Alfa achieves his most fully realized, expressive musical work to date, coupling his keen ear for looping, memorably emotive piano melodies with intuitive grooves and free-flowing jazz improvisation. Alfa is yet to be boxed into a specific genre.

Homeschool – “Loving You To Death”: A dynamic and upbeat tempo despite dark synth and an ‘80s anthem vibe. It has been a tumultuous year for Homeschool, the solo project of NYC singer-songwriter Tom D’Agustino. As a newcomer to life as an independent artist with unfettered control of the creative process, Homeschool has spent the past year experimenting with music and masculinity, inching closer to what they feel is an “authentic” way of being in the world. As a newcomer to acting, D’Agustino is reveling in the opportunity to explore the worlds of different characters, to “experiment with who I’m able to become,” he says. His long-awaited new EP entitled “Just Now,” will be released on May 19 via all DSPs. As a follow-up to the EP’s first track and lead single “Bound To Be,” which documents D’Agustino’s burgeoning sense of self, he has released this new track entitled “Loving You To Death.” D’Agustino wrote of the new single: “‘Loving You To Death’ was written during the tail-end of the Covid lockdown when my partner and I had just moved into an apartment together. We had spent a year living with her parents before that, and this song explores my neediness, clinginess, and overall attachment to her. It’s a fun, upbeat way to interrogate my constant need for love and reassurance that I have value. I think by reminding someone how much I love them, I can be sheltered from how I don’t love myself enough. I’m sure all that affection can get annoying though, so in the song, I am trying to convince her of all of these positive things about me so she won’t think I’m a needy little baby. But I so am.”
