Press Releases For April, Here Are The Artists

press releases for April

Fat Westbrook and Cedric St. Louis, Zoon, Bloody Bananas, Sam Kogon, Fatoumata Diawara, Sabina Sciubba, and Mike Dimes are the artists among these press releases for April.

Fat Westbrook and Cedric St. Louis – “Mike Tyson”: A confident rap with a fluid and fun flow and a music video shot at a gym. Hip-Hop acts Fat Westbrook and Cedric St. Louis have joined forces to collaborate on an upcoming joint EP called “Castor + Pollux,” due out in March 2023. This is the duo’s latest single a Hip-Hop/Rap song that’s been in the works since early 2020 and has been a fan favorite at the group’s live performances. Farrell (Fat Westbrook) and Cedric both are confident and cocky all while keeping it fun and lightweight. “Floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee – once you’re done with the song you won’t know what hit you.” Hip-hop artist, rapper, and instrumentalist Fat Westbrook draws his inspiration from both his hometown and Haitian identity, his music features raw stories, hard-hitting beats, and a charismatic word flow. The purpose of his music is to help people identify, feel, laugh, and love. Meanwhile, Cedric experimented in his high school years gaining experience and confidence with the release of a few mixtapes while recording in his childhood bedroom. As a Black gay man navigating in the Hip Hop and Alternative industries (respectively), he hopes to push himself in the direction of writing songs that empower the listener.

Zoon – “Gaagige”: A fuzzy-hazy shoegaze track with distant and buried vocals, building dreamy soundscapes of sweeping instrumentation and vibrant, immersive visuals. Speaking on the track, Zoon (Zoongide’ewin), the musical project fronted by songwriter Daniel Monkman, wrote: “I wrote the music for ‘Gaagige’ when I was going through a period in my life of questioning life and death. In my language, ‘Gaagige’ means forever. I started to obsess about the concept of ‘forever.’ When I was younger, that concept started to scare me because I really wanted death to be the final resting spot. Now, ten years later, I have a new relationship with death and this song is about me accepting and not worrying.” Monkman has recently announced their triumphant return with a forthcoming sophomore LP entitled “Bekka Ma’iingan,” an astonishing sonic landscape that will surprise and transport listeners, due April 28 via Paper Bag Records. To create the full-length album, Monkman sought Polaris Music Prize inaugural winner Owen Pallett to compose sweeping string arrangements, then performed by the FAMES Orchestra. Grammy-nominated Michael Peter Olsen, who is a regular in Zoon’s live band, played on the new record as did Zoon’s drummer Andrew McLeod (Sunnsetter). Grammy Award-winning Mark Lawson mixed the album, and in a burst of creative collaboration, after meeting in Montreal, Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo played on the album track “Niizh Manidoowig (2 Spirit).” In celebration of their new record, Zoon will be RANGE Magazine’s April 2023 digital cover story, coming soon. Additionally, they will perform with Ghostkeeper at a RANGE-sponsored Benefit For the Aboriginal Friendship Center of Calgary at Sweet Loretta (Calgary, AB).

Bloody Bananas – “Can’t Be For Real“: A Strokes-like atmosphere for a relatively slow but catchy song that easily finds its groove. Cary LaScala — who has a lengthy resume as a drummer, touring and recording with the likes of Jackson United (Foo Fighters), Wild Party, and Casey Spooner (Fisherspooner) — has stepped into the position of bandleader and frontman for his newest project, Bloody Bananas. “Can’t Be For Real” is the project’s first single and was produced by Ethan Kaufmann (Wild Party, Paper Jackets), mixed by veteran Los Angeles mix engineer Will Brierre (The Killers, Fleetwood Mac), and mastered by Steve Hall (Tom Petty, Green Day). LaScala wrote of the single: “Writing ‘Can’t Be For Real’ instantly felt like a single to me and cliche to say, it practically wrote itself. It flowed and felt edgy and catchy at the same time. That’s what I’m always chasing when I approach writing music.” “Can’t Be For Real” precedes a forthcoming Bloody Bananas EP. Stay tuned for more information, coming soon.

Sam Kogon – “All I Wanna Do”: A retro charm for an upbeat tempo and a glam-flavored-power pop-rock song fast working like an earworm. Sam Kogon has shared a hauntingly beautiful music video for the track, directed and produced by G.W. Duncanson. “All I Wanna Do” tells the story of an impossible love story between a mortal and a house spirit. Filmed at several undisclosed locations in Yonkers in Westchester County, Kogon enlisted a talented troop of creative technical and performance artists to produce the alluring cinematic offering that utilizes the crumbling remains of a historic Hudson River Estate as a backdrop. In the video, Kogon stars as a Phantom character, singing in an old-fashioned living room while the action takes place elsewhere. Spirits of child brides, beautiful witch temptresses (one of which is played by Violet Hetson aka Powerviolets), a trapper played by Danny Christmas, and even a frisky bear tell the story of an impossible romance between the two realms. Fun fact: the aforementioned bear costumed character is the same one that appeared in numerous episodes of the David Letterman Show. Hetson made the witch dress, and all other fashions used in the shoot come from Beyond Costumes, also located in Yonkers, NY. While the storyline may be chilling, the song itself is upbeat.  Kogon said he was inspired to write it after moving into his Westchester Apartment in a 1920’s era building.  He soon realized that he was not alone, yet found comfort in his uninvited guests. The classic love story of unrequited love takes on an unusual twist with Kogon’s smooth vocal stylings and catchy melodies.  Kogon, an alternative rock darling who appears often on college radio Top 10 lists, has performed with everyone from Al Jardine of the Beach Boys to singing lead vocals for the 1960s Baroque Pop group The Left Banke, best known for their classic hit “Walk Away Renee.” Heavily influenced by 60’s and 70’s pop music, Kogon has been performing professionally since his teen years growing up in Rhinebeck, New York.  Stay tuned for more from Sam Kogon, coming soon.

Fatoumata Diawara – “Nsera” (feat. Damon Albarn): Vocals with a strong traditional Malian vibe over rich textured guitars, synths, and percussion, as well as the participation from Damon Albarn. This is a track from Grammy-nominated Malian singer, songwriter, guitarist, and actress Fatoumata Diawara’s highly anticipated new album, “London Ko” set to be released on May 12 via Wagram Music. With the new album, Diawara continues to reinvent traditional African music, combining her Mandinka roots with afrobeat, jazz, pop, electronic and hip-hop influences. That synthesis is reflected even in the album’s title, combining the names of the Western metropolis of London with that of the Malian capital of Bamako.mOn “London Ko “Diawara combines forces with collaborator Damon Albarn (Gorillaz, Blur) who co-produces a number of tracks on the album and is featured performing on the first single. Diawara notes, “For me, “London Ko” means opening your mind. It also represents Damon Albarn’s connection to Malian music.” “London Ko,” a neologism coined by Diawara, represents an imagined continent bringing Europe and Africa together. While holding on to traditions, Diawara’s music gives a prophetic vision of what Africa can do. She invents an alternative space and time where it is possible to become master of your own destiny. Positioning herself as an actor in a future world, this album raises Diawara into the ranks of the great voices of Afrofuturism. In celebration of the new music, Diawara is set for a run of U.S. shows in select cities in April. The dates include performances at New York’s Brooklyn Bowl, Seattle’s Meany Hall for the Performing Arts, Inglewood’s The Miracle Theater, and Northampton’s BOMBYX Center For Arts & Equity. Diawara broke out in 2011 with her debut album, “Fatou,” which featured guest performances from legendary musicians John Paul Jones, Tony Allen, and Toumani Diabaté.

Sabina Sciubba – “Paris Tropical”: A fun and syncopated musical journey with a juxtaposition of many different cultural elements, and Sciubba’s deadpan delivery. Singer, composer, and actress Sabina Sciubba, founder of the Grammy-nominated Brazilian Girls, has confirmed the title of her upcoming third solo album “Sleeping Dragon” set for release on June 23, and the new single comes with a video for “Paris Tropical, “the second single out ahead of the record, following “Adam.” Sciubba invited pianist Jason Lindner (David Bowie’s Blackstar) to play synth on the track, which she says “illustrates a walk through Paris… a sequence of metaphors describing my impressions of Paris.” “I had been working on this song for some time but never had recorded a version I was happy with. I had almost lost hope, but something pulled me to it, I wanted to give it another chance, so I asked Jason Lindner to play synth on it,” says Sciubba. “We recorded late at night at Officina Sonora Bigallo studios in Florence. It was magical: at that moment, Jason incorporated exactly what I had tried to say in the lyrics: an odd juxtaposition of cultural elements which fuse into something new.” The accompanying video, directed by GOLDKIND, shows Sciubba dancing through neon-bright renderings of the city’s historic sites, accompanied by tropical animals. “Renaissance paintings, gray zinc roof, etiquette and aloofness, sophistication and classical culture clash with the bright mix of colors and languages, youth, nightlife, social unrest, rage, and effervescence,” Sciubba recounts. “The tension between an antique society and their more recent colonial past, the energy and friction which is generated by different cultures cohabiting have always fascinated me. There seems to be an abyss between the one and the other, but somehow it melts into one chaotic abstract painting.” In addition to Lindner, Sciubba gathered a host of collaborators for Sleeping Dragon, including Grammy-winning singer and composer Dhani Harrison (The Traveling Wilburys), cowriter Barry Reynolds (Marianne Faithfull, Grace Jones, Brazilian Girls), singer-songwriter Albin de la Simone, and renowned clarinetist Nico Gori. “I own a book of oracle verses, written by a famous Chinese military statesman and philosopher called Zhughe Liang.  Sleeping dragon is his nickname. It’s given me some insights over the years,” says Sciubba. “Writing music is like painting… you don’t know what it’s going to be like until it’s done. You may have a plan of what you want it to sound like, but it takes on its own life and usually becomes something quite different.”

Mike Dimes – “Kiss N Tell”: With laidback smoked-out production, the track layers glowing keys above skittering hi-hats. Mike drops hypnotic lines meanwhile, Dro Kenji rolls through with a melodic refrain and head-nodding bars of his own. The accompanying visual opens on this dynamic duo stranded on the side of the highway. As the beat kicks into high gear, the clip jumps from dreamy footage in an old school saloon to shots of the rising stars in front of a massive Texas flag and back on the road. Dimes will never “Kiss N Tell” though. Rising critically acclaimed San Antonio, TX rapper Mike Dimes has shared this new single featuring Dro Kenji, landing in the wake of the fan and critical favorite “Heavy Metal.” The latter has already gathered 1.1 million Spotify streams and counting as well as 139K YouTube views on the music video. At just 22 years old, Dimes represents the infectious energy of a generation that continuously refuses to be pigeonholed. With over 68 million streams on Spotify and 3 million monthly listeners, as well as over 21 million streams on Apple Music, he is a rising force on the underground scene quickly growing into a name you need to know. Get ready for more from Mike Dimes very soon!
