Peter Jackson’s “Get Back” Addendum Plus A List Of Every Song Performed

With everything written and filmed about The Beatles, a near eight hour documentary about a month in the life sure sounds like overkill and there are three types of people in this world

1 – Those who think 7.8 hours is too much

2 – Those who think it is not enough

3 – Those who are patiently waiting for the 18 hour cut, and hoping and praying that they don’t die before they get to see it.

The many, many reviews travel the same ground in January,1969: from a desultory Twickenham Studios where The Magic Christian will take over filming near the end of the month (a disaster of a movie, by the way), to the new Studio at Apple Corp where pianist Billy Preston arrives in time to be the fifth Beatle for a coupla weeks (and would sign to Apple, who released his biggest hit, “That’s The Way God Planned It”), to the rooftop gig at Apple’s Savile Row, stopped by the police. In the 21 days of recording and rehearsing, the Beatles nailed down six tracks and half of what would become Abbey Road.

Some notes:

1 – I know that sounds prolific (even as the band is worried they aren’t gonna get it done) and just think of this: The Beatles were back in the studio in January 1969, three months after they had nailed down 30 songs for The White Album. So first of all, they should have taken a long break and not jumped right back in. Whatever else may have been bothering the lads, what bothered them most was exhaustion.

2 – What pissed off George Harrison, who quit the band half way through, was John’s dismissal of “All Things Must Pass” and “I Me Mine” (Lennon: “we don’t do that, we’re a rock and roll band”) and McCartney interfering with George as he worked on “Two Of Us” and being shunted aside while John and Paul worked in tandem on the song

3 – The best moment in “Get Back” was watching how McCartney took a riff and worked it into “Get Back” in real time

4 – McCartney’s “All I’m saying is come on lads, we’ve tried that now let’s try this” is beyond patronising.

5 – McCartney is only the leader when Lennon let’s him be the leader.

5 – Heather McCartney is just adorable, and her stepfather is so affectionate and loving with her and the other three completely approve of her presence. It is the Beatles as family man and Linda, Yoko, Patti, and Maureen all show up. Ringo has some drawings by his children near his drum kit.

6 – McCartney standing up for Yoko Ono’s presence completely, and playing bass on Ono wailing through a feedback drenched arty one, and Lennon so completely pleased with his best friend’s embrace.

7 – Lennon was a biting, satiric, funny man and he nailed the best line during “Across The Universe”” “Nothing’s gonna change my world…. I wish it would”)

8 – Michael Lindsay-Hogg has some answers he needs to give, and at 81 years of age there is no reason why he shouldn’t give em. He stirred trouble between the boys and he hid a mic in a flower pot to tape a private conversation

9 – Billy Preston was a phenomenal presence, Lennon wanted him to join full time (“from four to three to four to five…”). Forced by the band decision to record live without overdubs (kinda funny when you think of what Phil Spector did), his electric piano showed them how.

10 – COVERS!!! The best, Chuck Berry’s “Rock And Roll Music” -a step back of seven years for the boys. The next best, any time they get into Presley. Eddie Cochran. Essentially, The Beatles kicked out the jams and got rid of the rust. Mostly 50s rock…

11 – Pete Jackson’s restoration is breathtaking, it looks unbelievable

12- Ringo Starr is a great drummer.

I loved every second and will probably wait a month and watch it all again.
