“Passengers” Reviewed

“Passengers” is a movie where I can barely write a word without giving it all away. You do not have to be a fan of sci-fi to be pulled into this story. I have rarely been so involved in a movie with the intensity I felt throughout the entire film. For not one moment did my attention sway.

I cannot tell you how there comes to be two passengers on this voyage. One awakens among five thousand “homesteaders” who are meant to stay asleep for 120 years until they reach the new planet. 90 years before they reach their destination, an asteroid impact causes system failures and a passenger awakes. All I can say is that you are a passenger too, time and space is suspended and there is only now.

Time, space, and now. This movie depicts these three concepts through the characters of Jim and Aurora. There is no beginning, they are not our Adam and Eve. Some question as to their future are best left unanswered. There’s some good chemistry between Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence which I appreciate. It was hot and implied, and as a woman, I don’t have to see them doing the deed to appreciate the intimacy.

There are only four characters of consequence, but I will not give away much more except to say the android bartender, Arthur, played by Michael Sheen provides respite where despair could prevail and in a subtle way, he steals scenes with obliging advice and a wry look.

In the end, this movie bears the question: is life about where we think we should be, or where we are right now? And do we die before we get there?
