“It’s an album of caustic abandon mixed with bright, melodic moments, heavy music that’s emblematic of heavy issues. She cites depression, suicide, gender dysphoria, independence, conformity and agency among them. It’s the road to inner truth as heard from the inside of an engine, without earplugs.”
– Buzzbands LA

“Armed with a stellar live show and a co-sign from Laverne Cox, she’s one of a few fast-rising acts on Mateo Sound, the label run by her brother, Kyle Draper. This is power pop turned to 11 or even 12, with a cool bluster that screams, ‘This will be on year-end best of lists.’ ‘Set fire to your new gazebo,’ Sera belts near the end of this 2:22 romp. With heat like this coming from the speakers, she might just light the match for you.”
– LA Record

“One has to marvel at the diverse talents of Pander Sera, the one-person audiovisual project of Sean Draper, who simultaneously sings, plays drums and operates a table of effects pedals. Her live performances have been described as raw and cathartic, featuring an explosion of sound and color.”
– The 405

LA-based electronic and multimedia artist Pander Sera shares her new single “Gazebo” and announces her debut LP, Bothy, due out March 22nd on Mateo Sound. Buzzbands LA premiered the track with praise, stating, “The new song ‘Gazebo’ is a 2 1/2-minute agitant built around furious drums (the artist’s first instrument) and synthesized vocals.” Pander Sera will be performing at Junior High LA on March 16th with Dylan Ewen and Penn Francis. Bothy is out March 22nd on Mateo Sound.

“Gazebo” is largely about when I was dealing with bouts of insomnia and night terrors in my early childhood, how I’d be kept up wide-eyed thinking about how I could even exist and if there would be some kind of end-credits sequence when I finally died. It references how I’d have to play with legos or jigsaw puzzles to pass the time until dawn just to keep myself from repetitious dreams of fatality. The subject’s gender swaps back and forth, addressing the early adopted dichotomy of identity I would often apply to myself. I would experience sudden hyperventilation, often a perceived speeding up/slowing down of time, shadowboxing with hallucinations, sleepwalking up and down bunk bed ladders, all the while searching for a way to move on and move out of my own head because I knew sleep was something I’d have to deal with my whole life and knew I had to figure out a way to embrace it. It morphed into a metaphor for overcoming significant personal obstacles. – Pander Sera

After years of bedroom experimentation, Pander Sera wanted to focus the project toward a more cohesive body of material that could be performed live with a deliberate hint of pop sensibility. The drums, being her first instrument, she would play along with phrases of looped vocals and accent moments with a heavily distorted oscillator. This minimal palette led to a series of creative limitations that could connect the album’s music to its themes: much of the music is in 4 and centered around an emphasized “home note” featuring friction between catchy melodies and abrasive textures. Bothy was written to work through the issues that dominated Pander Sera’s life around this time, such as depression, suicide, gender dysphoria, independence, conformity, and agency. She not only had to piece together her sense of self but also somehow rekindle a desire to stay alive. She felt as though she had been exposed to great cosmic truths and it was up to her to reconcile an overwhelming sense of meaninglessness with the need to carry on and create something she felt was worthwhile.

The word “bothy” refers to a temporary shelter found in the wilderness, and in her view it serves the material as an apt metaphor: What makes a home? Can a body be home? Can a perspective? These questions are punctuated throughout the album by audio samples of her real-life childhood home, from old family videos to recordings of neighborhood wildlife. With Bothy, Pander Sera’s goal was to face some of the worst demons conjured from her past and overcome them through a kaleidoscopic personal metamorphosis. The album was recorded over a series of live takes with minimal overdubs in 2017 and 2018 at Mateo Sound in Los Angeles with producer/engineer and lifelong friend David Burris.

BIO

Pander Sera is a one-person audiovisual project from Sean Draper, who simultaneously plays drums, sings, and operates a table of effects pedals. Pander Sera began in 2012 at a time of deep personal reconstruction following the suicide of a close childhood friend. Developing the initial themes and sonic palette while living in Santa Cruz, Draper moved home to Los Angeles in 2014 to help family and friends build a new recording studio, Mateo Sound. Draper also makes all of the visual art for Pander Sera, from album covers to music videos. Much of her work aims to explore and deconstruct various social and aesthetic binaries through which humans are forced to navigate. She’s stated that she is drawn to noise and feedback because they can act as a satisfying expression of the constant internal oscillations she feels living on the cusps of perceived genders.
