Oldies But Goldies: Me Protectin Kanye West In 2009

I was speaking to the former Sales Manager of a New Orleans TV station during Hurricane Katrina. He got his family together and moved to a hotel a day before Katrina hit. “Anybody who didn’t get out couldn’t afford to get out.” As W. Bush’s record on Africa proves, the President was not a racist but anybody who saw the film coming out of New Orleans might be excused for noting the almost exclusively black complexion of the victims. When Kanye West went on national television to claim “the President doesn’t care about black people,” he was voicing the concerns of ALL AMERICANS as a result of FETA’s disorganized and African American killing mismanagement of the rescue.

Look, Kanye was a dick for being mean to poor (well rich) little (well tall) Taylor Swift but Kanye West has released the best four run of albums in immediate history. From College Dropout thru the brilliant 808s and Heartbreaks the self-proclaimed musical genius has been a world acclaimed musical genius. There is no other way to put it: his flow is second to Jigga but his songwriting is the equal of any one working the modern pop idiom. 808s is the most nakedly devastated broken romance album since… wow, since Here, My Children!! That version of “Pinnochio” live in Japan, with West singing about no longer being human and the audience cheering loudly, is a terrifying look into the bubble that is his life.

Leno ridiculously asked West “What would your mother say about what you did to Taylor?”. Kanye’s mom, who he immortalized on “Hey Mama” from Late Registration and who died from a botched cosmetic surgery for which Kanye has blamed himself, would have said “You fucked up, next”.

West fucked up, he doesn’t need hysterical bullshit from Pink and Katy Perry, and he definitely doesn’t need supercilious bullshit from the New York Post. Next
