Oldies But Goldies: Back When Black Eyed Peas Were The Greatest Band On Earth

Black Eyed Pea’s The E.N.D is so good that the album dropped in early June and they just got around to releasing Fergie’s sure shot “Meet Me Halfway”. A great soul song plus dance track plus not much rap fronted by a woman who already killed solo for a guy who in one fell swoop has swept away all the dreams and Hilsons and replaced them.

The E.N.D. is so good the EP remixes Invasion of Boom Boom Pow and Invasion of I Gotta feeling are singlehandledly superior to the new Mariah Carey and the new Whitney combined -two Eps that start as great dance tracks and systemiatically affirm and transcend the art of the remix.

The E.N.D. is so good that they don’t just have the single of the year in Boyz Noize “Let the Beat Rock” remix, they have another three that could fit in the top ten with no sweat whatsoever. In what is the best album at least since Timberlake’s Future Sex/Love Sexy, it is everything Madonna uniformly failed to do on Hard Candy -a relentlessly brilliant piece of state of the art pop product that never stops shaking and shaping itself to your ears.

After months of listening to -a guy I always thought was a bit on the minor side before this, rethink modern pop songs on stuff like the original indie rock cum dance song “I Gotta Feeling” which morphed into David Guetta’s heavy bass brit smash (it’s still on the charts as we speak) remix, I still haven’t digged through to the end, every song trips me up and has me listening again and again. “Party All The Time,” is waiting in the weeks, so is “Showdown”. And those are just the two that have caught my ear today. “Ring-A-Ling” is catchy as hell.

It is an enormous achievement to make an album with, far from filler, aready to expand and expand and expand track listing. It is seriously brilliant stuff: you feel the songs are so bass constructed and well constructed they could go on and on and on remix em because, you know, energy never dies. Here is what the Boston Globe had to say: “There are some fun songs on The E.N.D., but the Peas would’ve been better served by putting a little more thought into the words that ride the beats.” Wow -really? Metacritic figured out The E.N.D. got 57% approval rate -as huge a condemnation of modern music criticism as Aquilante opinionating that the new/old MJ will be the best selling single of all time.

Look: Timberland? Couldn’t do this. N.A.S.A.? Couldn’t do this. The only person in the same realm is Lady Gaga. Nobody this year in any genre has come remotely close to the consistently dance froth genius of will on this album. Eminem couldn’t do it. It is Black Eyed Peas coming of age. After five years they are at the top of pops.
